Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
City Tap House - Penn Quarter offers "excellent food" with standout dishes like the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. While the QR code ordering system is unique, some find it "awkward and impersonal." Despite this, the "attentive staff" and lively ambiance make it a popular choice for group outings.

Had a great time with family. The ordering process at the table worked very well and the food was delicious. Highly recommend the Brussels Sprouts to share!

The BEST chicken and waffles I’ve had in the area. We are old fashioned and didn’t understand the whole QR code, no server thing. Kind of takes away from the whole dining out experience. Everything came out quickly, so that was a bonus.

The experience of ordering our food from a QR code rather than having a server was kinda strange and took away from the dining out experience. When we had questions about the menu or needed something simple we had to get up and find someone since there wasn’t a server coming back to check in with us. The food was just average, and it came out as it was ready and not all together.

I going to the automated QR code for all your ordering it diminishes the experience. This is one of my favorite DC places to eat, but a it will now be a secondary place if I have no place else to go. Quality and service matters.

We sat outside and had to use the QR code to order. It was extremely annoying and impersonal. When I pay that much for a sit down meal, I want personal interaction with a human. Your servers hate it and so did we. GO BACK TO HUMANS TAKING FOOD AND DRINK ORDERS!

Very rude managers (waitstaff seemed Ok). Went to grab some food & drinks and watch the MLB Playoffs and everything started out OK until we asked the staff to tune one of the dozens of TVs to the Padres-Dodgers playoff game. After waiting an ENTIRE HOUR for my wife’s food (although I got mine promptly) I felt compelled to speak up for the six of us at the bar (including an active duty Air Force guest whose wife hadn’t received her food that was ALSO ordered OVER AN HOUR ago) who wanted to watch the Padres-Dodgers playoff game. Subsequently, some so-called manger became extremely rude, closed my tab and handed me the bill claiming I was “yelling” at him even though you could barely hear yourself due to the noise level (although not before the wonderful bartender serving us handed me my final Old Fashioned, which was excellent.) In short, I can’t deny that the food was great (once it actually showed up) and the service was otherwise good, but I could never recommend this restaurant to anyone until its entire management team is fired & replaced.

I hate having to use a QR code to order and pay and then have to pay a tip. The hostess sat us and did not tell us about the QR code. The servers ignored us and then said you have to order by QR code. Three different people brought us food / drinks and said nothing to us when brining the food other than confirming who had which item. No one checked on us, asked us how the food was, etc. Why do we have have to pay a tip?

No service, online ordering on table didn’t work. Took us 15 min to be able to place a drink order before dinner. Getting someone’s attention to be served wasn’t easy and the place was empty. Food was ok.

I used to really like to eat here. However, this place is on the decline which is evident by the lack of customers. The service is nearly non-existent with mandatory QR automated ordering. I did not receive one item I ordered (I’m sure I ordered it), and the server blamed it on my failing to place the order. I then asked for a manager, who stated that it was no longer possible to order the item and then she also blamed me. I then ordered another item, which I was of course charged for, and it arrived very late to the table as we had to leave for a show. Needless to say, I don’t think I’ll be returning this place anytime soon. And to add insult to boot after the bare service (blaming me for failing to properly order using QR code), the tip defaults to 22%?!! How ridiculous given there is almost no service and when I tried to ask for help the female server would look at me and the table like she was super annoyed for us bothering her. This place seriously needs to get a grip! And seniors or customers with eyesight issues need not even bother because they will not assist with this new QR ordering.
