In our bar every cocktail tells a story so, we would like you to enjoy the drinks based on the stories of one of the biggest criminal gangs in English history. The 40 Elephants was an all-female organized crime collective active in London's Elephant and Castle District from at least 1873 right into the 1950. They specialized in shoplifting, with some blackmail and extortion thrown in to make them particularly badass. This gang was notable for its longevity and skill in avoiding police detection. Their most notorious leader, Diamond Annie, was known by the London police as "the cleverest of thieves".Forty Elephants funded a life of decadence in London roaring twenties, hanging about the glamorous hotels, bars and theaters they could only dream about before their turn to crime.Glamour was both a goal and a smoke screen for the Forty Elephants, through which they created their own thrilling world of fashion. money, and fame.

Nice place with an incredible bar and cocktail menu. The service is warm and concerned. The atmosphere is suitable for small tables. The cocktails ans whiskies menu is very interesting and plenty. Now, depending on the area you are the chitchating of others may become a noise. Be aware. Two things to improve, from my modest point of view: some tables need better light to be able to reed the menu proerly and please reduce the amount of ice on the cocktails: makes difficult to drink.

We decided to stick with starters, so two cauliflower veloutés with truffle oil which were absolutely delicious (though we didn't think the nuts added anythging). For our second starters, my companion chose the tamarind chicken wings (excellent) and I had the prawn cocktail(very satisfying and nice sauce). I drank 2 glasses of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and we had two bottles of sparkling water. We still had room for desserts as our dishes had been so good so then we plumped for chocolate fondant and sticky toffee pudding. It came to £120 but the overall experience was also festive and cheerful. Service was attentive and friendly though if they'd paid more attention to my jacket, I would have tipped. I recommend this restaurant ad so too does my dining companion I imagine.

In a lovely area of the hotel but we were placed at a coffee table set up - not a real table which made eating and drinking difficult as you were bent over reaching down and trying to pour your tea and eat the sandwiches. They then seemingly forgot us, we had to flag someone down to ask for more tea and when we finally flagged someone down to get the desserts they realized we didn’t get any scone service. I then had to ask twice for the bill just so we could get out as it appeared they forgot us again. They nicely took some off the bill but didn’t make the special afternoon tea date worth it.

the menu is very odd... not even close to being vegan (they have burgers and other meat dishes) their only 'cheese' is vegan. at lunch, their salads have a really strange combo of ingredients, (like sauerkraut) and, also oddly, have no sandwiches... it is a casual place with a limited menu (most of the same ingredients appear in various dishes) ... offering better options that are easy to prepare would make some sense. on the bright side, outdoor seating option right behind the tate modern is xlnt... and why i booked it!
