Located on the mezzanine and with a terrace to the front of the iconic Royal Exchange building in the heart of the City, Engel is a venue inspired by the golden age of 1920s Berlin. A decade marked by opulence, extravagance, and unfettered glamour. Engel comprises a bar serving modern, classic and vintage cocktails together with live entertainment influenced by the cabaret scene of the time. The name Engel - “angel” in German - is a tribute to “Der Blaue Engel,” a 1930s film starring Marlene Dietrich. While celebrating the past, Engel is very much a venue for today with contemporary serves and sounds interlaced with 20s classics.

Significantly better than sister restaurants at the Wolseley. The service is impeccable. Monkfish and edelweiss cocktails were the highlights.

Nice experience at 11am on a Friday. Staff were attentive and courteous. Very much able to have a conversation across the table with a friend without needing to increase my voice - which was a surprise given the very high ceilings. This was despite the Grand Cafe area being full as it became lunchtime. On this basis, I will definitely return. The menus are very good too now - really strongly Germanic cuisine, matching its name.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening at Albert Schloss. We were given a dining table at the rear of the basement venue, we could hear the stage acts but could not see. The beers on offer were fabulous with Paulaner and an unfiltered bier being our choice. The choice of food from the menu is somewhat limited , one of us had the burger and the other had the Curry Wurst. All was good. Our first round of beers were at the drinks list prices but we noted on our bill that subsequent drinks were more expensive (extra £1 per drink) to contribute towards the stage acts which we could not see. Wish the venue had been more upfront about this. We asked our server if we could move to the main area in front of the stage. This we were able to do and enjoyed several more beers after dinner and enjoyed the acts ( and paid the additional act tax) Overall a wonderful evening.
