LOCALLY MINDED. RESPONSIBLY RAISED. MICHELIN RECOMMENDED.

Housed in two of Vancouver’s most iconic buildings, Homer St Cafe and Bar is a contemporary restaurant set in the base of the historic Homer Building and the Beasley building in Vancouver’s Yaletown district.
Classic comfort cooking takes center stage thanks to a fire engine red rotisserie that roasts all manner of proteins. It’s chicken that’s the star here: served in quarter, half or whole portions, accompanied by classic sides basted in jus.
A decidedly adventurous wine and cocktail list rounds out the menu. The restaurant features two spaces that consist of an open concept kitchen “Chef’s Bar” where one can get up close and personal with the culinary team, a semi private dining room with reclaimed factory windows, and bespoke seating complemented by antique tiling.

Excellent service (Sophie), and food. They have a gluten free fryer, so although they don’t mention GF on the menu, the majority of their items were or could be made GF.

This restaurant specializes in French-inspired comfort food, and I’m a regular, though this was my first time visiting during their happy hour. The menu is smaller and slightly more affordable, so I was curious to give it a try. The floor staff, as always, were attentive. I was offered a choice between the bar and a table, and I opted for a table. I started with a local IPA and their steak tartare. It’s served with tater tots, which sounds intriguing at first but ended up being a poor choice. The tartare itself was disappointing, smothered in cheddar cheese and a strong dressing that completely masked the flavor of the meat. I wouldn’t recommend it—6/10. Next, I tried their beef and bacon burger. Unfortunately, it was overly seasoned, the bun got soggy almost instantly, and the burger was far too greasy. The lettuce wasn’t fresh, and the fries on the side were excessively salty. Another miss—3/10. To cleanse my palate, I ordered a cocktail called the Cucumber Negroni. While recording its preparation, I seemed to upset the bartender. The manager approached me, stating that filming was against the law and asked me to stop. Although I disagreed, as I wasn’t filming anyone in particular and was simply documenting my experience, I decided not to argue. I stopped recording, deleted the video, and finished my visit. I paid the full bill with a 20% tip—credit where it’s due, the server was excellent and the highlight of the experience. Final thoughts: The happy hour food was poorly executed, the manager’s attitude left much to be desired, and I wouldn’t return at this time of day.

Good and service were outstanding. Great space in an older Heritage home. We would definitely return. Thanks for a great family catch up.

This was certainly an interesting experience as I do visit the restaurant fairly regularly. The chicken and ribs were good as always but the experience went awry at dessert. We were within eyeshot of the kitchen counter preparing dessert and the chef cutting our cake slice dropped it a few times and then reassembled it back together with a blow torch. Then the maitre’d (not our server who was lovely) also toppled the cake on the plate and the chef had to fix it. Eventually the cake got to us and it was super dry (their version of the chocolate cake from Matilda). Our actual server took it away after we complained but the head server then decided to try a piece of our cake (still where I could see everything near the host’s counter) and said audibly “i don’t know what they’re talking about its not dry!”. I thought all these antics were wholly unprofessional. The cake had lost all its moisture and the maitre’d/head server was tasting sent back food in front of other customers. Very odd behaviour putting a weird spin on an otherwise fine experience.

Food service was so slow we left after 35 mins. Also, one of the platers was eating French fries off a diners plate before it was served which I thought was grossly unprofessional. Will never go back
