62 years of loyal customers can't be wrong. We are grateful to all of our customers, employees, and critics (...though we may not always agree!). The only way to find out the truth is with a visit. Oft imitated, never duplicated. Thank you in advance.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Open since 1949, this legendary destination is the king of San Francisco steakhouses. From luxurious carved-to-order prime rib rolled out on carts to chefs spinning salads to extra-large martinis with sidecars, every meal in the restaurant’s old-school dining room decked with ruby-hued booths is rollicking and unforgettable.

The infamous HOPR. I booked this reservation 6 months in advance -- as an SF native who's never tried this restaurant, I wanted to give it a shot. The restaurant itself is pretty large, with a handful of seating both inside the building and at the bar. We had a booth in the back and it was pretty spacious, although the lighting was a bit dim. We ordered x2 King Henry cuts and x1 english cut, but our server mixed up our orders and gave us only x1 of the first and 2 of the second. I'm not the type of person to complain and seeing the portion sizes, I was more than happy to eat what was served. The meal also comes with bread and butter and the house salad. All that go with the meal, but be sure to not stuff yourself before the main dish! The King Henry is definitely a huge piece of prime rib and if you finish it all, they give you a second thinner slice. The english cut was a nicer, thinner, more manageable piece of prime rib. The sides compliment the meal nicely-- you can order creamed spinach or creamed corn. For drinks, we got the manhattan and green apple martini. Beware, these drinks were pretty strong and they also leave the entire shaker so that was about ~3 standard drinks for each of us. Overall, definitely worth checking out but this isn't your typical dinner spot as you can rack up quite a bill here.

The meat seemed tougher/chewier than usual. But the flavor is always great for everything! Service was great! Where we sat was very loud so we had to talk very loudly too to hear each other.

I ordered the unadvertised “seared” prime rib. Don’t look at me like that. I happen to be one of those weird people that does not like rare prime rib. To me, it just tastes like greasy beef. And if I can’t get an end cut, I will skip the prime rib and do something else. However, HoPR offers a “seared” version of the King Henry cut (bone in). Our waiter said that this is is not recommended. So I ordered it. It was EXCELLENT! Flavor was great and it was NOT served swimming in a pool of juice. It is exactly the way I like it. So if this is your preference, do not be dissuaded by your server. I also had the mashed potatoes, which were too soupy for my taste, and the creamed spinach which was excellent. The only real drawback is that it is damn near impossible to get a reservation. It took me 4 months. And it is very crowded and VERY noisy. So this is not the spot for a quiet intimate dinner. But if a big hunk of beef is your thing, this place is hard to beat.
