Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

We were expecting more traditional Greek food. I ordered moussaka and it was more like a shepherds pie. I couldn’t find the eggplant. Mostly ground lamb and potatoes with béchamel sauce. My daughter had the halibut and it was tastless. There was only one napkin on the table when we sat down and you had to ask for butter for the bread that was so hard you had to mash it on your plate to make it more spreadable. The best part was the trip to the bathroom because you get to see the entire restaurant on your journey to an elevator that takes you to the cellar and bathroom. Disappointing for fine dining.

Interesting menu, excellent ambiance! We both enjoyed our meals although my chicken was a little dry. The waiter recommended an excellent wine pairing as well. The service by far was the absolute best, especially Moises (sp?)! We are both gluten free (allergic), and he provided great recommendations to accommodate us.

Kokkari is a delight from a warm welcome, to a fireside table, to friendly and professional service, excellent cuisine and the sights and smells of lamb roasting on a spit in the fireplace. Highly recommend the sea bream fresh from the Aegean and the lamb chops with flourless chocolate cake for dessert.

i had such a delicious meal at kokkari. Amazing service, amazing ambiance, amazing food. Do NOT skip the octopus or spanakopita. Both were so delicious. Everything we had was absolutely fab! I only wish i lived in sf so i could come back again soon.
