From the classic Italian music to the candlelit tables, the nostalgic atmosphere at Johnny Costa’s Ristorante feels like traveling back to midcentury times. It’s no wonder Frank Sinatra was once a regular at this fine Italian restaurant, which has been honored by Palm Springs Life as best Italian restaurant for 10 consecutive years. The Costa family continues the legacy of late chef-owner Johnny Costa, who was pals with Sinatra when he moved to Hollywood from New York in the 1960s, and a decade later served as the singer’s personal chef at his desert home. Costa’s pedigree lives on in his legendary recipes, including his classic cioppino. Open for dinner at 5 p.m. Closed Sunday & Monday

This is our favorite restaurant in Palm Springs! The food is amazing. I had grilled prawns over a bed of pasta with a garlic sauce. The prawns were just delicious, so tender and scrumptious. My strawberry lemon drop was amazing. The last time we were here I had the raspberry lemon drop and it too was incredible. We love, love the food here and the service is lightning fast. We can’t wait to try another new dish — kudos to the chef !!

We had a great lunch. We both had the Lite lunch with a grilled cheese sandwich and New England Clam Chowder. Both were wonderful. The Albariño wine and the Champagne Cocktail were outstanding as well. Service were attentive and prices are moderate. We are locals and long time Spencer’s customers and will be back.

Johnny Costas is one of our favorite Italian restaurants in Palm Springs, which includes Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, etc. I have never had a bad meal and we have gone there many times in the last 6 years we have been wintering in Palm Springs. Their Eggplant Parmigiana is the best; however, other people in my family would argue that the chicken parmigiana or spaghetti and meatballs are the best. You cannot go wrong with anything you order. It is old school Italian food, Delicious.

My first impression was a feeling of welcome with a friendly greeting and smooth jazz playing and soft but ample lighting for easy reading of the menu. We began with the ahi tuna appetizer which was excellent. The tuna was cut into small pieces atop a crispy shell with avocado and sauce, dressed with micro-greens. I had the poblano chicken; it had a smooth , tasty sauce. The chicken was cooked properly so as not to be dry. It was served with rice and fresh squash and green beans, which were fully cooked but retained firm. My husband had a filet cooked medium-rare with a nice red center. For dessert, we shared a molten chocolate cake with was rich and gooey. The service was efficient and not intrusive. The entire evening was pleasurable and can highly recommend this restaurant! The only negative was a group of 5 women who stormed in, in a loud and rowdy manner but quieted a bit after awhile.

Lovely room and considerate and well informed staff. Rainy night so didn't get to partake of the patio dining. Food was good - and thoughtful. wish our Branzino had been served with more or a side of salsa verde.
