In 1962, Johnny Harlowe made the jump from the silver screen to chef and owner of Dear John’s. Convinced by his pal Frank Sinatra, Johnny opened the iconic spot just a ways down from Sony Studios on Culver Blvd. It became the watering-hole for the Hollywood elite with Sinatra often in the corner playing the piano against the dark brick walls once lined with portraits of famous John’s. Seasoned chefs and entrepreneurs Hans Röckenwagner and Josiah Citrin have teamed up to re-open Dear John’s with an updated classic American menu and old-school cocktail list.

My name is Vincenzo Porcu as my grandfather, Vincenzo Porcu, who owned two restaurants in Sardinia. I come from Sinnai, a small town in the mountains of Cagliari. I've been working in the restaurant business since I was 14.The idea of visiting America first came to me when I was 22. Since then, I have been back and forth to NY many times until I decided to stay in LA, where I was able to have many work experiences. It was during a vacation in 2005 to Los Angeles, that ultimately persuaded me to make this my new home. I love Los Angeles and, in some ways, it reminds me of Sardinia. After working for a large family of restaurateurs, the Drago family, 4Sicilian brothers who have many places in this town, I decided to open my Carasau Sardinian Restaurant in Culver City.

I am so glad that José Andrés has opened this restaurant in Culver City. I love this kind of food and we found the preparation and the flavors to be exceptional. We were invited to try the wine before making a final choice. The babaganoush was exquisite, especially with the bread we were served. The scallops and black cod were perfectly prepared and tender. The lamb kabob with its pickled peppers and onions was special also. And those Brussel sprouts that everyone raves about are not to be missed! The waiters were knowledgeable and provided all kinds of detail. We were very satisfied with this amount of food. We would have loved to have tried the olive oil cake, but there was no room--next time! We will return.

My family and I have dined at Steak 48 many times, always a great experience until last night. The food was phenomenal!!! Zero complaints about that. Our server Jonathan was another story. Not very attentive, although we saw him going above and beyond at other tables in our area. We got tired of him passing by our table without stopping, so we decided to flag HIM down just to ask for a refill on drinks. We were the only black guests in that area and can’t help but wonder if his lack of attentiveness and customer service were racially charged. Anyway, the waiter’s assistant Kevin was great and made up for where Jonathan lacked! So we gave him the bigger tip! Suffice it to say, the service we received tonight will NOT hinder us from returning to this establishment. Thank you

We really enjoyed the beef bourguignon and risotto. We also had the crepe suzette for dessert. The server was very friendly, the tables are placed far enough apart that we had privacy. The space has a cozy vibe. The drinks were also very good.

The Culver Hotel has changed and improved their afternoon tea menu. There were pleasant little surprises in the food that I wasn't expecting---a little herbal note here, a little floral accent there (don't want to spoil the surprises), and voila! the food was tasty with interesting little twists. The tea selection was decent (about half a dozen or so) and the quantity was definitely sufficient for a full meal. The ambience was relaxing, not too busy when we were there, so not too noisy. Service is definitely acceptable, not quite white glove, but perfectly passable. And, given its location on the Westside, the price point is reasonable. A nice little hideaway amidst the bustling downtown Culver city. I will be back.
