Beauty & Essex has an innovative design that starts in the restaurant’s entrance, a well-curated modern-day pawn shop replete with a saxophone, boombox, quirky artifacts, vintage treasures, and an eclectic array of “one-off” pieces of jewelry. Continuing past the pawnshop, guests encounter a grand, circular staircase wrapped around a two-story custom chandelier, but only the adventurous will discover all that Beauty & Essex has to offer. With four distinct dining rooms (one private), two bars, a lounge, and a women’s bathroom complete with a salon including a luxurious sofa, and antique perfume bottles. The cuisine, much like the design, is intended to set a new course. Chef Chris Santos was one of the pioneers of the small, share plate dining trend that has swept the nation, and with the Beauty & Essex menu, he once again has created waves on the food scene.

Nothing else in New York quite matches the atmosphere of La Caverna. Cavern isn’t just part of the name – it is the décor as well! You’ll get the instant impression that you are deep in a cave far below the earth’s crust, but with none of the dankness you might find in a real cave. The menu is relatively short but sufficient for a bar atmosphere. If you’re putting together a party and looking for somewhere unique, La Caverna should be at the top of your list. With wings, croquettes, salads, lamb sliders, calamari, mac n’ cheese, grilled chicken, grilled cheese and a burger, there are plenty of munchie items to keep the party going. The cocktail list has something for everyone to make the night fun at La Caverna.

Dirty French NY is a bistro experience created by Major Food Group, located in the Ludlow Hotel on Manhattan’s storied Lower East Side. The menu takes its culinary cues from the timeless dishes of classic French tradition and gives them an exciting, “dirty” twist using modern techniques and bold, thrilling flavors. In the same way the dishes “come alive” with flavor, the restaurant itself swells with energy as the hours lead into late night, featuring some of New York’s greatest playlists and a staff equally as vibey. For any questions regarding an existing or future reservation, please email reservations@dirtyfrench.com

The 5 Handroll Set was a well-rounded experience. The combination of Spicy Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, Bay Scallop, and Crab showcased the freshness of the ingredients perfectly. The rice was seasoned impeccably, and the handrolls were assembled with precision. A must-try for sushi enthusiasts.

A really great meal with super service in a lively atmosphere. Don't be put off by the quirky entrance via a "pawn shop" - walk in and you are guided into a cool bar and a large dining room. The food is very delicious- fresh, zingy with a creative menu. The portions are good sizes and the desserts are HUGE! One is enough for 2 people and the peanut butter cake might serve 4!

Food was great BUT the band noise level is beyond allowable decibel. It is NOT fun to be eating with live band’s blaring noise. If this is just a bar, maybe BUT if they want more people to enjoy their meals, they need to tone down music until usual dinner hour. Otherwise, they will only attract non-family, single crowd.

Contra is your favorite bartender's favorite bar right now. Excellent, nuanced, tasty cocktails and similarly great small bites. Come with 2-4 people, have a couple rounds and snacks (get the wagyu tartar), and then walk to dinner in the neighborhood. Or the other way around!
