The year was 1943, and Jim and Alice Wimmer decided to take a big risk, buying a small existing roadside restaurant known for its char-broiled steaks. We chose to eat at Oakwood because Green Lake is halfway between us and another couple. As a resort town, Green Lake is quiet during the winter so the restaurant wasn't busy on a Friday night. We ordered shrimp havarti and potato skins for appetizers, and ribeyes, beef bourguignon, and gnocchi as entrees. The shrimp havarti was delicious and the steaks were large and cooked perfectly. The only complaint is that the potato skins were just that: potato skins, like large not quite done potato chips. We expected them to have toppings like cheese but there was nothing on them.
