Mushrooms are the heart of what we do at the Joel Palmer House. We have always endeavored to obtain seasonal and local ingredients and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables, some of which come from our own culinary garden. We are frequently inspired by ingredients found in the cuisines of France, China, Thailand, Poland and India, so we call our cooking "freestyle." Our dishes pair well the celebrated wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Our extensive, Oregon-focused wine list has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. Of special note, The Joel Palmer House ranks as one of Oregon's finest historic homes and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Oregon Historic Register. Built in 1857, the house is Dayton's oldest standing structure.     Easy to make the reservation online (though limited open spots) through Open Table. Showed up on time for our Monday 530 pm res for 4 and was greeted with a smile and genuine positive energy. When seated, Brandon, who took great care of us, explained the specials, several of the regular dishes and wine choices. The service was mostly Brandon who was helped by other members of the staff, as well. Noise level was much more muted than usual for an exposed brick decor and lent to the feeling of a cozy dinner. It seemed many of the guests were regulars and gushed over the owners, staff and dishes. We didn't try the desserts as we were stuffed after such wonderful offerings Biggest hits for us were the sunchokes and Bolognese.

    All staff was very nice; everyone was professional, friendly, and attentive. The buffet was great, but for the turkey (fine with gravy but difficult to cut) and stuffing (delicious but made with sausage, so many folks unable to eat). Salmon, gravy, potatoes, vegetables, and salads were excellent and the pumpkin pie was perfect. Wonderful choice for an stress-free holiday dinner.
