Award-winning cuisine right next to Cologne Cathedral: The Michelin-starred restaurant taku serves East Asian fusion cuisine in a modern, Far Eastern ambience. The cooking style of Michelin-starred chef Mirko Gaul is a modern concept of "Asian Fusion”. Gaul reimagines the flavors of the haute cuisine of Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. Executive Pastry Chef Fabian Scheithe pampers the guests with his extraordinary desserts. His sweet delicacies form the grand finale of every menu. Restaurant manager Christoph Gonzalez deliberately focuses on organic wines and gladly recommends corresponding wines. The taku has been awarded with one Michelin-star for years, 8/10 pans in Gusto and 16/20 points at the Gault Millau. The interior of the starred restaurant creates an elegant and Asian inspired atmosphere. Calm colors and light installations reflect the ambience of Asia.

Situated in Cologne's Old Town, Sünner im Walfisch serves flavorful German fare. Its setting was once a brewery that now features classic décor. Guests can start their dining experience with a small mixed salad or a hearty potato soup at Sünner im Walfisch, a main course of wiener schnitzel with French fries, broad beans with bacon or a grilled rump steak and herb butter. When traveling for pleasure, especially internationally, visiting some of the better restaurants in a given town is one of my higher priorities and pleasures. I have eaten at many restaurants with Michelin stars, and I can say with confidence that Taku is in the very top rank of restaurants at which I have had the pleasure to enjoy a supremely excellent meal and dining experience. The food is imaginative, thought-provoking, delicious, perfectly executed, and memorable in all positive ways. Each course was a true delight for the taste and for the eyes. The "club sandwich" course with a kind of Tonkatsu tuna "cutlet" on perfectly toasted brioche was a real standout. The servers are exceptionally talented, hitting just the right balance of friendliness and knowledge, without being stiff or robotic or overly formal at all. Each seemed to express real personality and enjoyment. I speak okay German, and everyone was willing to switch back and forth from German to English as needed. The sommelier was a real standout, sharing his enthusiasm for the wine choices, and explaining each wine happily and well. The pour on each wine-pairing was just right too. Sometimes in restaurants you barely get enough for 2-3 sips; however, here you received a nice half-glass ~ enough to enjoy with the course and a bit after until the next course. The pacing of the meal was excellent too, with no long waits between courses. All in all, it was an excellent meal. Highly recommended.

you come at peak time Saturday evening 7 pm you get the full experience of a packed pub like restaurant with the noise level like I wouldn't normally tolerate in a restaurant where food is served. However, we were told that this is the way here and all other seats had been reserved, so we stayed and tried to cope. The table was at a very busy spot right next to the point where the staff had to get in and out, so not really very comfy. Having said that, I am still happy we stayed because the staff was super friendly and attentive with a local attitude that really turned things around. And: the food was amazing!!! I had the classic "Sauerbraten" and it was so good! Overall: Would I go back there? Yes, but not when its so busy. After 8 things already got a little bit relaxed, so if you have the choice go earlier or later than 7 pm. The place is fairly small but has an upper level too. You might be lucky and get a nice spot there.
