Akahoshi Ramen is a humble ramen shop in the city of Chicago. Everything is made in the restaurant, including all soups, seasonings, toppings, and noodles.

We are not an authentic ramen shop, though we value the history of ramen, and our ramen is influenced by its past and its future potential. The dish, popularized in Japan after World War 2, is symbolic of both struggle and perseverance. It is both a simple dish, and a fantastically complex one that we treat with reverence and respect.

Roughly translating to “Red Star,” the name “Akahoshi” is a love letter to two cities; Sapporo, Hokkaido, where red stars adorn city monuments, and Chicago, Illinois, where the red star decorates the city flag. Our ramen is influenced by Japanese and American ideals in cooking.

We hope you will join us to enjoy a bowl of ramen, made with the respect and passion it deserves.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: One of Bon Appétit's 2024 best new restaurants in America, this Logan Square spot is the brainchild of Mike Satinover, better known as "Ramen Lord" to the fan base he built up over a decade posting about ramen on Reddit. Get comfortable at one of the spacious booths, or watch the action at the counter overlooking the kitchen, and choose from four different ramens like the Akahoshi Miso, with pork chashu and bamboo shoots. Each bowl is made with incredible attention to detail, showcasing just how nuanced ramen can be.

Sunday Special is an opportunity for Ramen Lord and his team to create unique, one-off ramens. In collaboration with our friends at Rare Tea Cellar, we've created a Truffle tsukemen. Midwest noodles, thick broth of truffle and katsuo dashi, served with a variety of chashus, including duck breast, pork belly, chicken mushroom nikudango, and ajitama egg. Each ticket is for an order of the tsukemen and a truffle-infused cocktail.

Will return again. Food and service were great. I recommend trying a cocktail while you are there too. Creative and tasty. I tried a soupless ramen this time and it was really unique and delicious.

It was very good! We got stuck in traffic from downtown so we were 20 min late. Were able to be seated but time restricted. I wish I knew it’s for 1 hour seating but the ramen was very nice!

Really enjoyed my spicy miso ramen and glad that we made the res. Loved the soundtrack but too loud for where I was seated. Broth could have been hotter, though noodles were piping inside the mass. Clearly a lot of care put into the rich, thick broth and crinkly noodles. Brought me back to my time in Japan.

Finally got a reservation here 🙌🏽 And oh was it it worth it! We sat at the counter and got to see the magic happen. Ramen Lord himself even brought us our ramen which was pretty neat. Definitely will be fighting for another reservation to try the variations of ramen they introduce throughout the year. Shoutout to Mo, our server, for his kindness and cool demeanor.

Chef Mike and team continue to provide an outstanding product in an intimate, but lively setting that feels like a true Japanese ramen shop. His obsession with technique ensures that you’ll get probably the best bowl of ramen in the city.

Spicy miso was too salty. Also, I had made a reservation a month ahead of time and still had to wait for more than 10mins when I arrived several mins early.

Easily best Ramen in Chicago and Top 5 Ramen's I have ever had. Terrific flavor in the Miso Ramen and great on a cold Chicago night. Cocktails are tasty too.
