Asador Bastian is a Chicago chophouse with Basque influences from acclaimed Chef
Doug Psaltis. Located in the iconic “Flair House” originally built in 1883, this historic
townhouse has been revived and brought back to life with culinary inspiration from the
great asadors of San Sebastián, Spain to serve the world’s best boutique beef without
compromise. The most remarkable dining experience comes from the purest ingredients
delivered in the supremely thoughtful, welcoming and hospitable manner. This ethos
has directed every aspect of the experience at Asador Bastian, whether you’re joining
us for small bites and libations in our Bar Room or for a more intimate experience in our
Dining Room.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: In a historic River North townhouse, you’ll find Asador Bastion, named one of 2023’s best new restaurants by Esquire. Acclaimed wife-and-husband team Hsing Chen and Doug Psaltis lead the kitchen, which turns out Basque-inspired feasts starring impressive steaks cooked over a live-fire grill alongside caviar churros and arroz cremoso. It’s all served in an opulent dining room decked with olive green leather banquettes and vintage Murano glass chandeliers.

Asador Bastian welcomes RAEN winery, founded by second-generation vintners Carlo and Dante Mondavi, continuing their family’s legacy with a focus on site-driven, terroir-focused Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. As grandsons of Robert Mondavi, they blend Burgundian techniques with a modern, minimal-intervention approach. RAEN, short for “Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally,” emphasizes native yeast fermentations and a subtle use of French oak during aging, ensuring each wine reflects its vineyard’s unique character with purity and elegance. Dedicated to sustainable and regenerative farming, RAEN practices organic and biodynamic viticulture across its 25 acres and three key Sonoma Coast sites: Fort Ross-Seaview, Freestone-Occidental, and Bodega. These wind-swept, Pacific-influenced vineyards, with their diverse soils and elevations, produce wines of complexity and finesse. By prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, and dry farming, RAEN crafts wines that capture the raw beauty and energy of this rugged coastal terroir. We are excited to offer a curated menu and host RAEN winemaker, Melanie McIntyre for the evening to share her knowledge and expertise with you. She will visit each table to offer a unique and personal experience. Our expectations were high going into the reservation. The steak was good but the portions are small and the starters even smaller for what you spend.

Excellent experience. Every dish we had from apps to desert was unique. The beef truffle tartar was very tasty and had a great flavor. The fish and steak were presented to us and grilled were amazing. Great side dishes was the bone marrow mashed potatoes. Definitely will go back to try other dishes.

It took 35 min for waiter to come to table and that was only after getting up to say something. We had waiters coming to the tables next to us, moving the tables closer to us to accommodate a group of 6, so we had tables on either side of us 5 inches apart. When we could finally order (after no apology for the delay), the special wagyu steak and pasta dish was very bland, no flavor at all. The pasta just tasted like plain box pasta and the steak had 0 flavor despite being some special steak from Japan. More than happy to pay a premium for a great meal but this was just a total disappointment for what was ranked as “14th best steakhouse in the world”

Hi Brendan, We're really sorry to hear about your experience at Asador Bastian. We take pride in our service and it's clear we missed the mark during your visit. We understand that you found our special wagyu steak and pasta dish bland and the pasta just plain. We also acknowledge the delay you experienced and the discomfort it caused. We appreciate your feedback and will use it to improve our service. We hope you'll give us another chance to provide you with the quality dining experience we're known for. Best, The Management Team
