About this restaurant

  • Good for business meals
  • Good for groups
  • Great for outdoor dining
Bar Primi is a pasta shop devoted to ‘primi piatti,’ the pasta course. What began as an idea for a small space in New York’s East Village has since become a downtown New York staple, housed on the Bowery for the last ten years. With this second location in Penn District, chef-partner Andrew Carmellini will carry on his same tried and true methods of making fresh pasta traditionally prepared and cooked to order, using a variety of non-GMO semolina and specialty ‘00’ flours, organic eggs and family recipes. Italian wines are offered by the glass and by the bottle. A playful list of signature cocktails, which includes the original Frosé, aperitivi, a robust beer list, amari and coffee by La Colombe are also features.

HORRIBLE ATTITUDE PROBLEM of a hostess! I don’t get why such a girl was hired to be the face you first see upon arrival. I had made a reservation stating it was an INDOOR seated table. The hostess then appointed a gentleman to walk us and led us to the outside tables where it was humid and raining. I kindly asked the gentleman leading us if we could be sat inside instead. He said he’d check with the hostess at the front. He came back to say “sorry we only have outdoor.” Then I got technical only on the account of swearing I saw my reservation specifically said indoors. The hostess says to me “it doesn’t matter what it says it’s gonna say that and we will seat you wherever we have available; we have reservations on those indoor tables.” I said “right… well that’s deceiving and misleading to label it indoors but the seating would be wherever… but I’m ALSO a reservation and mine says indoors and I know I’m early by 10 minutes to my reservation so if it helps I’ll wait closer to my time to be seated indoors like my reservation clearly says.” She then goes with attitude and a mean mugged face “okay well you can just wait there if you want.” *she points to exactly where I’m standing at* indicating stand here all you want. “I said well those two-tops are open could you not seat us there… as we’re an indoor reservation.” She says “No. There’s reservations on there.” Confused, because I AM an INDOOR reservation too, I requested a manager. A kind manager approaches apologising and willing to at the VERY LEAST attempt to take a look at the tablet to be more accommodating. She returns shortly to say she can seat me exactly where I pointed were open available tables. I said those tables were exactly where I had first mentioned to the rude host. The manager fed me that there was a “last minute cancellation”… conveniently. Look I’m an AGM over by Rockefeller Plaza. I know what good service, good hospitality, and good front of house staffing looks like. The girl is a poor hire.

Our waiter gave perfect descriptions of the two roses available by the glass. I enjoyed the one I chose. My husband and I split the dressed arugula as a starter. It was more than enough, simple and delicious. You could really taste the good olive oil. For the main, I had fusilli with pesto and some fancy cheese. It was so tasty, but I could not finish it all, so my husband, who had the spaghetti, polished it off. I was wanting to try the affogato but I had no room. The space is beautiful, spacious and very convenient to Penn Station. They asked if we had a train to catch. Will definitely be back.

Food and service are always amazing. However, the hostess team needs to work on their attitude. Don’t be in the hospitality business if you’re not interested in being hospitable. Horrible condescending attitude.

I love Bar Primi and have been to several of your locations in NYC and your sister restaurants. I'd have to say this was my worst experience at your establishment. The food was excellent, but the service was terrible. Our waiter was unfriendly as well as unaccommodating. He never checked in with us, which led us to have to flag down other staff to get the remainder of our order in, to get the table reset for the next course as well as the check when we were trying to pay. We were a party of 5, and the restaurant was not crowded. I'm hoping this was a one-time only situation, but this truly was not the best experience.

We come to Bar Primi whenever we arrive ( or depart from) the Moynihan train station. It’s such a great addition to that area! Food is fantastic and the service is excellent. Great vibe!!
