   Bar sympathique, ambiance décontractée, bon service mais nourriture beaucoup trop cher, surtout pour la quantité qu’on retrouve dans l’assiette! On nous explique le fonctionnement et on nous dit que ce sont souvent des petites portions et donc qu’en général il faut prendre 4/5 plats à partager (pour 2 personnes). Le plat étant en moyenne à 30/35$ (certains plats moins cher mais certains beaucoup plus cher aussi), je vous laisse faire le calcul…c’est juste hors de prix! J’ai pris les pétoncles en entrée et il y a seulement 3 petites pétoncles coupées finement (pour 32$ le plat), mon amie a pris le boudin noir, idem 3 petits morceaux de boudin dans l’assiette. Les vins au verre ne sont vraiment pas extraordinaires non plus mais on paye 14/15$ le verre pour des vins méconnus. Bref j’ai payé à moi seule 70$ (hors tips) pour un verre de vin, un plat avec 3 pétoncles coupées et 3 falafels. Evidemment je suis sortie du bar en ayant encore faim! Payer 70$ et avoir encore faim après, c’est un gros non! Je regrette vraiment d’avoir dépensé autant d’argent dans ce bar et je ne recommande donc pas.

   We visited Bar St Denis on a quiet Monday night, arriving around 9 PM. The space is sleek and modern, with a long white marble bar, warm metallic accents, and a strikingly lit ceiling that creates an even glow across the room. Given the sparse crowd when we went, the atmosphere felt a little more exposed or stark. Dimmer overheads and warmer lighting might soften this effect. We started with the endive salad and the mackerel. The endive salad was topped with micro-planed cheddar and small, flavorful croutons which added some depth, but the dressing didn’t quite counter the bitterness of the endives as well as it could have; a touch more sweetness would have helped. The mackerel, on the other hand, was a standout. Served in four small seared cuts, skin-up, in a thin, aromatic sauce with foraged berries and a delicate, herbal pod, it tasted like springtime. Recent fishing disruptions in Quebec meant this fish was from Spain, but it was beautifully prepared: oily, tender, and exactly what you hope for in mackerel. Then my wife had the gnocchi, and I had the aged pork. The gnocchi had excellent texture, with a green sauce and bitter leaves that balanced each other well. The aged pork was a large daily cut, glazed beautifully, with a rich, gelatinous sauce that clung to the meat rather than pooling on the plate. The gelatin in the sauce was noticeable in the best way: lip smacking! Disks of carrot and cornichons helped cut the richness. To drink, I had been looking for a certain aperitif, but lacking that, the server recommended a Quebec-produced Genever. I’m really glad I took his suggestion. It was a new experience for me and paired exceptionally well with the mackerel. Our server was excellent—pleasant, friendly, and engaging when we invited conversation. He explained everything with interest and patience. Bar St Denis delivered well-executed food, thoughtful cocktails, and excellent service. I’ll be back at a different time to experience the space at its best.
