Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

Overall, it was very good. Oysters Rockefeller was a little on the cool side nice big Caesar salad. My wife had the seafood ravioli and was excellent. I had the New York strip asked for a chard medium rare came out charged medium well waiter said it’s very hard to get a medium rare when you charge it and walked away. The only reason it’s not five stars

Waited 2 hours for food then seemed like they left the seafood in for 2 hours as rubbery as it was. Huge disappointment but cool setting in the safety deposit box room

Been here numerous times and its usually really good. Last night was a disappointment. Appys were good - crab cake and pork belly. But we went for the tomahawk and boy was it a really poor piece of meat. There was nasty grizzle throughout the meat making it very difficult to find a decent bite. And when you got some meat it was tough and flavorless. We left huge chunks of it on our plates. I’m not one to return a dish, although at that price I really should have. And if the waiter was more attentive he would have known too.

The hostess was excellent upon our arrival! We had a 7:30 reservation and were brought promptly to our table. The food was excellent! The bread, the clams casino, the Kan Kan pork, duck fat potato cake, and the short rib wellington were all to die for. The portions were large and cooked very well. The cocktails were also delicious! The atmosphere was wonderful. The bathrooms are on the outside of the restaurant and really not that clean, not sure if that's at the hotel's discretion but they could use a little more attention. The bus boys and other staff were attentive and we honestly only tipped 20% in the hopes it went to them. They cleared the table after each course, filled our waters, bagged up our leftovers, etc. Our waiter Alex was another story. I've never seen a waiter so uninvolved in his job at an establishment like Butcher and Banker. Not sure if he was having an off night, but when the first thing a waiter says to you after sitting there for 5-10 minutes is "are you ready to order?" is a turn off. No Hi, how are you, introduction, nothing. My boyfriend and I looked at each other and Alex must've known we were taken aback as he then said "drinks first?" which then took over ten minutes to come back for two mixed drinks. We then felt like we had to order both the appetizer and dinners at the same time because who knows when we'd see Alex at our table again. We would've ordered a second drink with dinner but Alex never came back to our table to ask. I can totally understand if the restaurant was packed, but at any given time in the room we were in, there was no more than 4 tables. Alex not once came over except to take our order and then asked if we wanted dessert, which he didn't even present a menu for. We ordered two espresso martinis, and he dumped the bill off quickly, if only he was so prompt in his service elsewhere. The food was excellent and the value for it was great, but I don't think we'll be returning strictly due to Alex's service.

Bread was stale. Drinks were a little overly sweet. Steak was beautifully cooked medium rare. Melted in my mouth. Creamed spinach was lovely. Lobster Mac and cheese was good, big pieces of lobster, but the cheese sauce wasn’t as creamy as I would have liked. Service was excellent. Ambience was very cool.
