Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

Meh. Food was just okay and our waiter was angry.

Went for an early dinner before a Bocelli concert at Madison Square Garden. Food was solid. Both of us had filet mignon’s cooked to order. We shared the maple bacon roasted brussel sprouts. Delicious. Cocktails were very well made. Only drawback was lighting (too dark!). Service was very good. Would definitely go again.

A Timeless Vaulted Escape in NYC For our 12th anniversary, my wife and I wanted a memorable dining experience, and we found it in this hidden gem tucked away in the historic New Yorker Hotel. Housed in what was once an old bank vault, this steakhouse offered more than just a meal; it was an enchanting journey into the past. From the moment we stepped through the doors, the ambiance transported us. My wife, who’s lived her whole life in New York, remarked that the setting made her feel like she wasn’t in the city at all. The design—ornate, elegant, and brimming with old-world charm—evoked a sense of grandeur. It felt like stepping into a 1920s time capsule where every guest seemed important, fancy, and yes, a little bougie. The food was exceptional. I started with the crab cake, which came paired with a vibrant wasacaca sauce—a unique Venezuelan-inspired touch that added a fresh, tangy kick. For my main course, I chose the buttery salmon, which quite literally melted in my mouth. It was perfectly cooked, rich, and flavorful, leaving me savoring every bite. My wife opted for one of their signature steaks, and it was cooked to perfection with just the right balance of char and tenderness. The service was attentive and thoughtful, matching the opulence of the venue. If I had one critique, it would be the lack of non-alcoholic beverage options on the menu. While it wasn’t a dealbreaker, a few curated mocktails or even house-made sodas could have rounded out the experience. Overall, this restaurant made our anniversary truly special. Between the historic setting, the exquisite food, and the impeccable attention to detail, it’s a place we’ll cherish as part of our memories. For anyone looking to escape the city’s hustle and immerse themselves in timeless elegance, this steakhouse is a must-visit.

It was a disappointing experience. We sat in the vault, which could have been very cool…but then there was a shelf of random antiques. Maybe they were somehow tied into the history but it just looked like your grandma decorated it. We ordered 3 New York strips, which were $58 each. They were all tough, lacked flavor abs were overall not good. The sides we ordered were the fries, mashed potatoes and maple bacon brussel sprouts. The fries and brussel sprouts were the best thing we ordered. The mashed potatoes were nothing special. For $350, we should not have left hungry.

We travel to NYC several times a year and the Butcher and Banker is at the top of our list of where to have a great meal. This restaurant has some the best steaks we have had and the selection of beverages is great. And don't forget the dessert !!! To die for. If you visit NYC this is a great place to eat.

I would like to start by saying that the food was delicious. However, the service was terrible. The server an older white gentleman was very sarcastic and rude from the moment we sat down. Every question was met with a rude sarcastic response. He snatched the food out of my hands to place it where he wanted after it was put down on the table, even though it was my order. He did it in a very aggressive manner and said no to requests that were reasonable in regards to dinner and told us he would do it when he wanted to. It was a very expensive bad experience. He was still tipped well because my response was a reflection of who I am and not how rude, condescending and disrespectful he was. He should learn how to be respectful to customers no matter the background and skin color. I saw how he treated other customers and it seems he took a disliking to us as soon as we sat down. I loved this place and it was one of my favorite restaurants in NYC and it was ruined by him. It is disappointing that management allows that type of service.

I have been to Butcher and Banker on many occasions. On this visit it was with my two teen grandsons. They were impressed with being able to dine in the “vault”. The meal was very good but I must say that the entire experience was extremely rushed. Not something that I am used to there.

Service was a little slow, but waiter was very nice! Food was just ok for price point. Bathroom was messy with trash overflowing. 20% gratuity automatically added to check, which we did not realize until waiter told us as we were walking out the door. (There was only four of us) Won’t go back.
