Caffé Greco, Melbourne’s iconic dining institution and meeting place, is reopening after three decades in Oakleigh. Its origins trace back to the inspiring story of Nick Madalena, a Greek man who journeyed to Rome in 1760, founding the original Caffè Greco, which has since become a revered national institution in Italy, celebrated for over 260 years. This tale of migration and the pursuit of a better life is what motivated Nick Zampelis to establish a Melbourne branch of Caffé Greco, continuing a legacy of cultural exchange and community that spans centuries.

As Melbourne’s own Caffé Greco reopens, it draws from this rich heritage of bringing together diverse minds, continuing the tradition of being a cultural meeting point where patrons can not only enjoy fine coffee but also engage in the kind of conversation and creativity that defined its Roman predecessor.

Walked in at 5:50 and i waited alone for friends to arrive. I was seated for 20 minutes. Waiters were just chatting amongst themselves because it wasn't busy and yet not one person offered me water or asked if i wanted a drink. Just as i was about to leave, a waiter approached me about a drink. I stuck around. The meals we had were great. Great flavours and presentation. I enjoyed the Lamb giouvetsi. Great hearty meal. Authentic greek flavours. The seafood looked and tasted fresh. Big, flavourful meaty grilled Prawns. Great selection of Italian and Greek inspired meals. Enjoyable experience as the original waiter looked after us. Worth a try

The food took a little bit longer than I would have liked to come out but the quality of the food was great. We ordered the Athenian Kebab as a main course and I would have preferred the pita bread cut into pieces rather than the meat just on top. It was delicious though. The staff are friendly and attentive. I am definitely going back

I must admit initially we were very disappointed due to a mix up with our order ,but, the Manager on the night handled the situation brilliantly I must say, being the service industry for over 50 years He fast tracked our food and insisted on offering his apology on behalf of the premise with no charge for the entree. He was professional and comforting on his approach and remained calm and apologetic throughout the ordeal His service alone warrants a rerun which I certainly will

Our experience at Cafe Greco was lovely our group had a lovely experience and right from the booking and our arrival we were greeted and taken to our table no waiting everything flowed our food was great and our cocktails and drinks were perfect great night .. lots of energy and great atmosphere highly recommended…

We decided to experience the latest offering in Oakleigh. We dined at the new Cafe Greco, and while I had high expectations based on the ambiance and menu, I think Oakleigh needed some Italian cuisine offerings, I left disappointed. The biggest letdown? The prices did not match the quality of the food or service. The portions were surprisingly small for the cost. We ordered the chicken skewers and lamb skewers. No fries or salad accompanied them. It comes with an onion salad, which we opted out because of an intolerance, a giant tomato and a pita bread which was soggy from the tomato. Nobody ate the tomato. What really soured the experience though, was the lack of flexibility. I have an intolerance to garlic and politely asked if the tzatziki could be swapped for another dip. The server stated that they don’t do substitutions. In a time when many restaurants are accommodating dietary needs, this felt both outdated and unwelcoming. The fig pizza was delicious, but small in size. The meal was nothing bad but nothing memorable either. For the price I paid, I expected a higher level of service and better food. Unfortunately, we all left feeling like we had spent too much on a meal that wasn’t worth it. This was my second time eating at Cafe Greco and will not be returning anytime soon.

We really enjoyed our first time dining at Caffe Greco. The food was delicious and staff were friendly and attentive. The restaurant and outdoor dining section were almost at capacity so lots of energy and great vibes coming from this relatively new eatery in Eaton Mall. Look forward to returning in the near future!
