The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

    Server didn’t know Mother’s Day prix fixe. Manager has specials in locked drawer in office but manager running 30 minutes after opening. Out of seven things ordered, the buyer was decent, fries meh, omelet below par, French toast tastes good but bad presentation. Could explain why the restaurant was mostly empty on Mother’s Day

    The food was average in my opinion. The chocolate mouse was served on a desert plate like it was thrown on the plate in a rush.not appetizing to loook at. Normally it's served in a wine type glass. I don't think I would go back for the price.

    Always love Chez J. We go with a group of 6-8 several times a year. Food’s always delicious and the staff is terrific—we can sit and talk for as long as we like.

    Very Charming place. Ambience very good especially with the piano player, food excellent, except the desert, we had profiteroles, awful. Overall really nice place.

    I had high expectations because this place was recommended to me. The wine was good and dessert was excellent. The appetizer and main course is where it lost points. The shrimp cocktail I had could have been cleaned better for the price you pay and I found the duck one of my favorite foods to only be average. Service was good.

    I was last here a few years ago and I'm happy to report that everything is still excellent. The food is outstanding and generously portioned, the wait staff friendly, efficient and helpful, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

    Four friends for lunch before a matinee. Chose the fixe prie menu for 30 dollars solid choices (pay, potato leek soup, beet salad, coq au vin, steak frites, poached sole). Everything was prepared well and deliciously done. Nice ambianc. Very good value.
