Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Chef Kristi Brown

From the OpenTable editors: Eater, The New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, and the James Beard Awards have all sung the praises of chef Kristi Brown's Seattle soul cooking at Communion. The pork neck stew is non-negotiable, alongside creative dishes such as "hood sushi," or cornmeal-crusted catfish rolled with pickled veggies and remoulade. That plus the welcoming vibes in the industrial chic space set in the city's historic Black district have made Communion one of the country's best new restaurants in recent years.

It’s very loud here and the service was very friendly but you can tell they are on a tight time clock. We were seated 20 min late but were told we had to leave our seating after eating for 80 minutes. I know this place is very popular and the food was really good. The hoecakes, mac and cheese were amazing!!! I’d totally get the food again but maybe take out next time.

Everything was amazing! Every dish was gourmet so I can't and "shant" complain about the price lol. The portion sizes of the smaller dishes & appetizers were a little pricey but I'm ok with it because I usually over eat on appetizers and can never finish my main dish so I'm thankful because the smaller plates helped control the budget but I will admit they were all so good we did over indulge anyway lol. We're from Atlanta and we've had a hard time finding really good soul food in Seattle. Their fusion of soul and other cuisines was done so well! First, we booked the very first reservation and was first to show up and we're glad we did because many came trailing after us. The staff was so friendly and accommodating! Very helpful with food and drink choices as well. Let's get to the food (we ordered almost every dish but I'll highlight a few): Collard Greens (not the salad) WITH THE TURKEY was our favorite dish! It tasted like back home and probably topped our family's own recipe. I honestly would order next time just that with hoe cakes as my main dish lol. We were very pleased! The mac & cheese wasn't our usual baked type but it was still great. Deviled eggs were delicious, I just wish there were more than three for the price because we definitely wanted to order more. The hoe cakes IMMACULATE. We ordered four plates of them. Do I need to say more? The Mojo Chicken, my dad devoured and he's picky lol it was falling off the bone and was a WHOLE chicken. The Ramen with duck, DELICIOUS. The lamb tips was a little more Mediterranean style than Caribbean with the hummus and side bread (almost tasted like sourdough) that we forgot the name of. The lamb was cooked to perfection but the style of the cuisine wasn't quite our forte but it was still good. The mussels & clams and catfish sushi were good but compared to everything else on the menu, we could have done without them. Overall, 10/10 and will be back to try the rest of the menu!

We were so excited to try Communion with all the hype around it for the past several years. Despite having a reservation we had to wait for 30 minutes to be seated. The food was ultimately fantastic but the long wait despite a reservation soured our experience. Not sure if we’ll go again.

The food was amazing & top notch! Not one disappointing Bite! Our server was incredible and took amazing care of us! Our only poor experience was when the Host came over and told us that we needed to wrap it up because he had 2 reservation coming in. We were truly taken aback! We were celebrating a Birthday! We were a party of 4. The people at the same table as us was a party of 5 and had been there longer that we had been there. After spending $550 (pre tip), I was really upset and disappointed with that treatment! I’ll think twice about recommending or returning for a while!

Something different for Seattle. We absolutely loved ALL the food. The fried catfish was our favorite. I will definitely be back soon. Highly recommend for a fun night on the town!

The food is incredible! Unfortunately, we did have to wait 30 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. It was a bit surprising to have to wait so long without being offered a drink while we waited, however the food was absolutely stellar. I highly recommend the chicken wings, mojo chicken, and fried catfish.
