Had graduation lunch which was advertised at 20 GBP/person but initially charged 30 GBP/person. Was further overcharged by adding the full price of steaks on top of that 30 GDP/person, however, eventually got refunded for that mistake. Food was overpriced. Wouldn't recommend the place for any special occasions. Staff was friendly.

We went to Howie's for the second time last Sunday, after I ran the Edinburgh marathon. Having eaten there once before and really enjoyed it, I purposely selected Howie's as the place I wanted to go to after the race. The restaurant is in a fab location and the building premises are really inspiring. The food was excellent! I'm gluten-free and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We started with traditional foods: I had the cullen skink and my husband had the haggis, needs and tatties. He also had half lobster for the main course and that looked really delicious. We didn't get round to dessert because we were really full. My husband had also bought a special bottle of champagne to celebrate my finish and the restaurant were more than happy to serve that up to us. We did pay £5.50 corkage, but we both thought that was really reasonable. The staff are really warm and friendly and are happy to chat with you. You don't feel as though you're being rushed. Whilst there, we were treated to someone (another diner) 'addressing the haggis' Burns style for some German tourists. It wasn't Burns Night, I know, but it was fun to watch and gave us some added entertainment. I wouldn't hesitate to go back there again. Indeed, I might visit Edinburgh JUST to go back there. Excellent value

My third visit to Howies and I have to be honest, it was the worst. I booked well in advance asking for a nice window seat as it was for my parents 50th - we ended up smack in the middle of the restaurant. My main course was utterly tasteless and the coffee my father and I had was tepid when it arrived. The staff are all excellent - attentive and very pleasant - so for that reason I will go to Howies again but the overall experience was definitely a let down this time.

I was here for dinner with my boyfriend after reserving a table online. I had a great tomato & orange soup as a starter, and then had the "Fresh catch of the day": hake veronique with grapes and mash potato: really tasty! The Shetland salmon my boyfriend had was very good too, but we didn't like the onion rings, maybe not quite what we expected. Average prices. Overall, we were satisfied!

We have dined at Howies a few times before so had a good idea what to expect. The waitress was so friendly and informative about the menu and took our order after offering us water and extra bread. Howies food is always very good and this time they excelled. I had Cullen Skink for starters, my wife had the salmon mousse. The fish soup was a meal in itself and went down well on a cold day. I had a lamb casserole for main, my wife having the stuffed chicken breast. Both were very good although I would have liked a few extra veg. with the lamb. We were offered a sweet but I'm afraid we were full! The welcoming atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff and nice airy surroundings makes Howies our first choice when dining in the capital.

The food was great as usual, been a few times now. The service good also. Just a quick dinner, a nice little pasta dish.
