   Excellent food & service. The rack of lamb was done to perfection & the Gorgonzola filet is sinful. Still the top steakhouse in Calgary!

   We have always enjoyed Hy’s and consider it one of our favorite dining destinations. However, in my 26 years of dining experience in Calgary, I have never encountered a restaurant charging $2.80 for a small taste of wine I requested before committing to a $56 order of two glasses of wine. Additionally, this was a celebration for my son’s birthday. While the restaurant kindly brought a small in-house sorbet for the occasion, I was still charged $7.12 for it. Really, Hy’s? I didn’t notice these charges on the bill at the time and paid a generous tip, only to discover them later at home. I must say, I am very disappointed.

   Excellent steak house. From the food to the excellent service from Dino, our server, we had an amazing time. Very comfortable elegance. Great selections of steaks and other items. Nothing was rushed and nicely spaced. It was a great night out for a special occasion

   We love going to Hy’s but on a Saturday evening when there are lots of people, including a big party in our section, the woman playing guitar and singing was a total irritation. There were two ceiling speakers above our table in the dining room and all we could hear was her voice. We spent the meal trying to talk over it. Terrible!! Then when she took a break the canned music was so loud our waiter asked another to have it turned down. Our server was making our salad at our table side and it was super loud. Obviously, the transition between the singer and the canned music was a problem. Overall, too much noise from patrons, terrible sound from the singer, bad transition to canned music. Just very loud.

   You put too many people in a small place. In order to get to our table, one customer had to stand up and physically move her chair. We felt bad. We spent $275 on meal for 2 people. The mashed potatoes were bland and I had to ask for something to give it more taste. Sour cream was provided. Didn’t quite do the job. We ordered the Caesar salad that they make in front of you but due to congestion they had to make it in the corner and not in front of us. That is a big reason for ordering that salad is to see it made in front of you. Service was just ok. Heard for her to get to our table so we didn’t not get asked if we needed a second round of drinks till halfway into our meal. Overall, I will try other restaurants before coming back to Hy’s Calgary again.

    I've been to a bunch of the steakhouses in Calgary and they all have their ups and downs. Hy's is no different. The vibe inside is way less like other steakhouses and feels more like an upper casual chain. It's very packed and the music was also pretty loud so it felt a little overwhelming in that way. The food, however, is tremendous. We started with Cheese Toast and Caesar Salad (prepped tableside). Cheese toast is definitely some of the best I've had, and the Caesar was hands down top three if not *the* top Caesar I've ever had. Incredibly garlicky! (Our server was Dino. YMMV with other servers.) We shared the bone in ribeye, with mashed potatoes, cauliflower gratin, and roasted broccoli on the side. The steak was tremendous, the cauliflower was amazing (though very very rich. Be prepared.) and the roasted broccoli was exactly what you'd expect. I would say the mashed potatoes were the let down of the night. They just weren't that great. They weren't horrible, but they weren't good. For dessert, we were really at odds. I love cheesecake, and my wife loves chocolate cake. We couldn't decide which to get but we were so full that getting both was off the table. So we left it up to Dino to surprise us, and ended up with the cheesecake. As far as cheesecake goes, it was pretty wonderful.very straightforward but they prepare it with a hint of orange citrus and it brings a real nice little pop of flavour to an already good cheesecake. Other than the atmosphere being a little higher energy than we expected, the only other thing that bugged me was that in a restaurant where you're going to be dropping at least a hundred dollars a person, they charge you $5 for a soda, and then still charge you for refills. (Which wasn't disclosed. I just found the charges on my bill.) That being said, we're still definitely going to go back because these two things aren't enough to remove it from the roster.
