Disappointed with the menu.very limited and uninspiring. The position of the cafe is great but I will not be returning in a hurry and would only recommend it for a coffee or breakfast rather than lunch.

I have visited this cafe many times over many years, however the food was not up to expectations. I ordered Smash 'n Hash. The Bearnaise sauce over the poached eggs was floury, the bacon was way overcooked as was the smash which was burned on the outside. I would not hurry back.

Praise: 1) Loved how quiet it was and the trees surrounding the outside tables are quite pretty. 2) Really pleased it is a cafe that serves breakfast menu till mid afternoon! Areas for improvement: 1) Food - I ate from the breakfast menu and my dining partner ate from the lunch menu. I ordered the bruschetta. No avocado available so I substituted for haloumi, which was decent. Unfortunately the bruschetta wasn't as tasty as expected and I think what it was missing was a lack of dressing. Even a decent drizzle of balsamic would have been 5x better. The one lone mushroom on top tasted overcooked & rubbery. My dining partner ordered the quinoa patty from the 'lunch' menu and when it came out I was really disappointed with the size especially given the price and I asked her if it was going to be enough food for her. It should be listed under 'light bites' or the server should make a suggestion when the quinoa patty is being ordered that if you're hungry to add a side. 2) This is a little nit-picky but all these little things added up... I ordered a tea and later on asked for some honey to go with it. The honey came out in a little packet of mass produced honey and I thought to myself surely being a cafe they could have at least put the honey in a little dish, or go the one step further and use good quality Western Australian honey. 3) Service - our initial server (young european guy) was very sweet but appeared to be in such a rush when taking our orders. which I commented to my dining partner after he had taken our food orders. Turned out he was definitely in a rush because I had ordered an egg to add to my bruschetta but that order wasn't put through. We saw him leave not too long after we ordered so it became clear why he was in a rush. I came to John Street Cafe based on the really positive reviews online, but I was disappointed and felt quite let down by our experience. Would I give them another go? Hmm.. probably not unfortunately.

Service was a bit slow and the two egg breakfast was a bit bland - they were busy so maybe that explains service.
