About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
Established in 1937, Le Veau d’Or reopens under neo-bistro extraordinaires, Chefs Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson.

The renaissance pays homage to the incredible history of the space while bringing an elevated level of execution to the food and beverage programs.

Le Veau d'Or serves a $125 prix-fixe dinner menu Tuesday - Saturday and an $85 prix-fixe lunch menu Tuesday - Friday. We can accommodate up to four people per reservation in our main dining room. Unfortunately, we don't push tables together for larger parties, but our private dining room can host groups up to 24!

Our bar is available for walk-ins where guests can enjoy lunch, dinner, or just a drink!

Our intimate dining room means we are unable to adjust party sizes once a reservation is confirmed. Decreases in party size will be subject to a fee of $50/seat.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: The James Beard–recognized restaurateurs from Frenchette, Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson, took over one of the oldest French restaurants in New York when they restored and reopened Le Veau d’Or in 2024. Take comfort in the wood-paneled walls, red leather booths, and red-and-white checkered tablecloths, and get ready for a polished prix-fixe menu of pâté en croûte, poached lobster, and île flottante, among others. Catch a nightcap at the cozy bar—it’s a tiny treasure with only five seats.

This was our second time at the new version of Le Veau d’Or, and both times were fabulous. The service was great, and the food was just the way we like it. French, authentic, simply and excellently prepared. We each got dishes that were different than our choices last time, and were happy again. I had the souffled potato appetizer and the skate wing Grenobloise. Crepes Suzette for dessert. My husband had the artichokes a la Grecque appetizer, the monk fish Bourgogne, and gratin au chocolate for dessert. Cocktails and wine…. All excellent! I could even order a half glass of wine to go with my fish after I started with a cocktail… we will try to make this one of our go to restaurants, but it’s very popular and not easy to get into.

A flash from the past, yet totally current. Wonderful waiter. What looks like a short menu turns out to be too many wonderful choices. Best pate and best duck I ever had. Can’t wait to go back.

Spoiler alert: Le Veau d’Or is my favorite restaurant in the entire world, has been for going on 20 years, and this is going to be an unqualified rave. I loved it in its previous, quieter, private-clubbish incarnation. I love it just as much in this buzzy, high energy (yet somehow still intimate) reboot. Everything just… works. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but if either the cervelles de veau or cuisses de grenouilles are available as first course specials, grab them. Escargot surprise your taste buds by eschewing the traditional garlic butter for a more pistou-like mixture, with the inspired addition of burst cherry tomatoes. I never thought I could be surprised by escargots. I was wrong. Among the mains, any chicken preparation on current offer is guaranteed to be succulent and divine, and served with a small bowl of perfectly cooked rice, a seemingly minor touch which reminds you how rarely you ever get served perfectly cooked rice in a restaurant that isn’t, say, a risotto (and that’s usually a crap shoot in itself). Skate wing, gigot of lamb, canard aux cerises — all wonderful. Absolutely do not skip ordering their insanely addictive frites a la carte, and do not sleep on the salade verte (a la carte at lunch, complimentary at dinner). You’ve never had a more delicious, perfectly seasoned and dressed bowl of greens in your life. Trust me on this one. Desserts are *all* excellent, but the crowd pleaser is definitely the île flottante. The *entire* team at Le Veau is doing a remarkable job in ensuring a near-flawless experience for their customers. Crucially, they make it *fun*, the absolute antithesis of stiff formality, but without ever tipping over into “schtick”, or, worse, sloppiness. As I mentioned before, I’ve been a regular here since 2006, and this Le Veau 2.0 is both familiar and completely new, and I couldn’t be more thrilled for the team with their renewed success. Long may they keep a table reserved for me.

Everything about le veau d’or is perfect! Definitely my favorite French restaurant in NYC. From the moment you step inside, the entire staff (from the hosts, to the bartenders, to the servers) is incredibly warm, friendly, and welcoming, ensuring an outstanding dining experience. Highly highl recommend the duck as well. Loved every dish and our waitress was extremely kind. Cant wait to go back again…

More nit picks but the bread wasn't warm albeit tasty. The steak bled out meaning it didn't rest long enough. The drinks are priced a bit higher than average imo.
