Founded in 1996 the ideas for the Marblehead Chowder House were actually hatched a few years before. Sitting at "The Barnacle," overlooking Marblehead Harbor one raw winter day, while the spume from the rough saltwater painted the windows and the Sam Adams Lager flowed freely, a concept was born. Casual, coastal and cozy - fresh seafood, fin fish, shellfish and hearty chowders in a warm, relaxing atmosphere that says "seaside" - a place that had tradition, patriotism, and a New England heritage about it. Fresh ingredients, house-made soups and chowders, comfort food with a twist freshly prepared to order were all musts! Features unique to New England were the foundation – Ipswich Belly Clams (aka steamers, softshells, pissers), fresh Lobster Roll, a Raw Bar with half-shell oysters and clams and, of course, live Lobsters arriving regularly. Lighthouses and other nautical décor highlight the ambience to create a coastal dining experience like none other in the greater Lehigh Valley.

Our server and food were excellent, however the front desk/host staff were not. When asking to be placed at a booth, they seated us in a very small both. So much so that when we got our meal, there was not any room to even put all the food we ordered, making the experience very dissatisfying.

Made a reservation for Valentines Day. We entered the parking lot to find it packed. Arrived a few minutes before our 6pm reservation and was told they would be with us soon and to wait. They were very busy. They called us and took us to a very small booth for two next to the server and bussing station. Lots of noise and dish clanking. It was a little hard to have a conversation without being startled when dishes were stacked behind my head. We sat at the table for quite awhile and finally a server came over. She was visibly overwhelmed by the nights activity. She welcomed us back since this was not our visit and explained the specials for the day. I inquired as to the market prices of the lobster. We placed cocktail orders and waited for the server to return once she checked on the market pricing. Bread was served, but not warm as it normally comes to the table. Server stopped buy to let us know the bar was backed up several times and would bring them our as soon as made. Again asked about market price. She ran off to find out. Returning with pricing information and informed us that it takes a long time to prepare the night special martini. We ordered our meals, still no cocktails. Our shrimp cocktail and salads all served at the same time not enough room at this small booth. Still no cocktails! Finally the cocktails arrived along with our entrées. We hadn't finished our salad. Had them removed with everything we could do without to have our dinners on the table. I had the Giant Lobster tail, it was cold after all the rearranging of the table and the candle to keep the butter warm was not lit. I requested it be lit and off went the server. She returned after a wait and couldn't get the flame lit. Off again to get another candle. I had to help her light the candle by holding the cold butter. Dinner was very disappointing! Cold lobster and cold butter! Last Valentines day we had a lovely time here, but not this year! We won't be going back next year for Valentines!

We haven't gone out on Valentine's Day in many years. We had a 5:30 pm reservation and when we pulled up, the parking lot was pretty crowded. We got sat promptly and our server came over right away. Even though it was crowded, we didn't feel neglected or rushed. We started with Caesar salad which was delicious. I ordered stuffed shrimp and hubby got the mix grill. Both were tasty and made well. We skipped dessert as I had made chocolate dipped strawberries. So we had a lovely meal there.

Our server was outstanding. The overall restaurant is very clean and the staff is very friendly Food had a lot to be desired. Oysters were very good Caesar salad was poorly prepared Main dish was supposed to be linguine, turned out to be Penne, sauce was like a bowl of soup Seafood was done well, shrimp, scallops, clams Lobster was overcooked and stuck to the shell. Inconsistency poured drinks. My second time there and I know they were busy but they need to prepare for that. No substitute for properly prepared food! I don’t mind paying for a great meal($264 for 2 with tip) this was not worth it. I’ll go back and be more selective
