Marquess Tavern offers a charming atmosphere with "fantastic staff and food." Diners rave about the "delicious" chicken schnitzel and generous Sunday roasts. We waited over 1hr 15 mins after ordering our food and asked 2 waiters and we still didn't get our food. When it finally arrived it was cold so we ended up leaving. Very disappointing.

I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. It’s frustrating to wait so long for food, especially when it arrives cold. I understand how disappointing that must have been, and it’s not what you expect when dining out. I hope your next experience is much better! Thank you for sharing your feedback.

An hour and 10 mins for starters to arrive. Then another hour and 10 mins for the main courses. My pie was cold. My friend’s roast chicken dinner was a quarter of a chicken for £18.50. It took us 45 mins to flag someone down to finally bring the bill. Only come here if you have all day to spare and don’t mind cold food

Hi Matt, I’m really sorry to hear about your experience. Waiting over an hour for starters and main courses is frustrating, especially when the food isn't served at the right temperature. It sounds like the service was also lacking, which can really dampen a meal. Hopefully, they can address these issues to improve for future customers. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I last ate here around 10 years ago at which point this pub had a great reputation. I'm really not sure what has happened in the time since... We were a party of 3 for Sunday lunch with prior booking. It took 20 minutes and prompting of a waiter to get as far as receiving menus. When food orders were taken there was no wine list. That arrived 10 minutes later, after which there was a further 20 minute wait before I decided to go and order drinks at the bar and bring them over instead. As a sign of how disorganised things were a chef was bussing dishes in and out of the kitchen... 75 minutes after arriving the food was served. Maybe just a bad day? Fair enough if so, and if the food were exceptional or even just ok I could forgive the poor service, but it was just so poor - mealy, frozen roast potatoes, watery cold cabbage, congealed gravy and everything seriously over-seasoned. This was replicated across three different roasts. I don't like to leave negative reviews and sympathise with how hard it is in the restaurant industry at the moment but this experience fell so far short of what could be considered a good experience that I want to write it in the hope that management will read it and look into getting their house in order. Ambience was nice though! 1/5

Service was shocking, obviously seemed like they had a lot of new staff who had no idea what they were doing. Our meals took over an hour to arrive but they did comp us a free round of drinks for our troubles. There was one manager holding the entire place together. Food was delicious once it arrived. Will be back but hope they have fixed their service issues

They mentioned they were understaffed but unfortunately, it led to a really poor experience. We were sat 30 mins late, the service was pretty bad and the food came out missing items.
    Marquess TavernResponded 7 days ago
That must have been incredibly frustrating for you. It's truly unfortunate that being understaffed significantly detracted from your experience at the restaurant. It's crucial for establishments, regardless of how busy they might be, to uphold a consistent level of service that meets customer expectations. Your feedback is invaluable, and I appreciate you taking the time to share it.

Due to 2 members of staff walking out the kitchen was backed up and we wait 1hr 45mins for our food which sadly had bits missing. The table staff worked as hard as they could to help and apologised a number of time we was given a discount. Such a shame as this was a family meal to say farewell to my sibling returning to New Zealand after a short visit for a family funeral
    Marquess TavernResponded 7 days ago

Understaffed and very busy, so very slow service. Sunday roast wasn't great. Although large portions.
    Marquess TavernResponded 7 days ago
Thank you for your feedback! I'm sorry to hear that the service was slow and that the Sunday roast didn't meet your expectations, though I’m glad to know the portions were generous. We appreciate your input and will work on improving both our service and the quality of our meals. We hope you’ll consider giving us another try in the future!

Food took an hour and a half to arrive. Host was uncommunicative. The venue was completely packed and barely any staff, we were so surprised they kept allowing people to sit down. Staff were arguing amongst each other, doors were slamming from all the tension. Roast was okay and sides were pretty bland. Couldn’t wait to leave.
    Marquess TavernResponded 7 days ago
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! I’m really sorry to hear that your visit didn’t go as you hoped. Long wait times and unhelpful staff can definitely put a damper on things, especially when the place is busy. It's also a bummer when the food doesn't quite hit the mark. We’d love the opportunity to make it up to you, so I hope you’ll give us another chance!

We visited for the 1st time in a few years as we’d seen it’s been refurbished and in principle the lunch deal seemed, and was, very good value. However, I ordered a club sandwich which came with egg in it which I don’t eat and which is not a normal part of a club sandwich, but was not mentioned in the menu description. No big deal, I’m not allergic and my wife and I swapped lunches but it meant we both ate meals we didn’t particularly want. I raised it with the person running service when we finished and they promised to raise it with the team to include a better description on the menu. I didn’t ask for or imply any desire for any reduction in the bill or anything like that - our call to have eaten up before mentioning it - but I was disappointed that they seemed to imply it was my fault because ‘this pub has always put egg in their club sandwich’. Of course if you hope for new people to visit, or regulars to try something different, there’s always going to be a first time they order it, so I thought that was a bit weird. We ate all our food so we paid all our bill without quibble, but I left feeling a bit sad that we’ll probably not go back as I was made to feel a bit stupid for not knowing something that a) I couldn’t have known, and b) that spoiled my lunch. This is a stunning pub to be in and over the 20 yrs I’ve been living here I’ve spent a reasonable amount of time here including a few meals and birthdays etc, , just not in the last few years. Other peoples lunches looked tasty and I’m sure most people who visit will have a much better experience. However, I think ours probably means we won’t be back anytime soon. It just felt a little like because we’d had the cheaper lunch deal and aren't regulars we weren’t within our rights to give feedback. But at the end of the day, if it had been great, we’d probably have been back to try the a la carte soon enough. Do visit and form your own opinion, I think we were probably just unlucky. But beware surprise eggs.

I appreciate your detailed feedback regarding your recent visit. Hearing from our customers always benefits us, as it helps us improve our services and menu descriptions. I’m sorry to hear about the confusion with the club sandwich and the impression you were left with. It's great that you’ve enjoyed our pub over the years and celebrated special occasions here. We genuinely value both new visitors and loyal patrons. I assure you that your insights will be taken seriously and discussed with the team to ensure we do better in the future. Thank you for encouraging others to visit. We hope you might give us another opportunity, as we would love to provide you with a more enjoyable experience. Please feel free to reach out with further suggestions or concerns.
