Mateo Bar de Tapas is the first solo venture from chef Matthew Kelly, housed in the old Book Exchange building in the heart of downtown Durham. Featuring a menu that blends the flavors of Spain with beloved ingredients and dishes of the South. We offer a casual, yet refined, menu of Spanish small plates with Southern inflection. Accompanying the food is a robust Spanish wine list as well as one of the largest sherry offerings in the country!

    The food was okay but not great, not that interesting. We noted it was our anniversary and were still seated near the front door and tables are all so close together that you can’t have a conversation.

    The Tapas was a nice change from the usual full dinner experience. My friend and I shared several dishes and the were all unique and delicious!

    Mateo has an amazing reputation and it's well deserved. Every item was a hit with the Salad being our favorite of the night. This is a great, fun experience!

    Mateo is always a great experience. A variety of delicious small plates and exceptional service. It does tend to be loud although the upstairs - which is our preference - is less so than downstairs.
