Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Jason Peel

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Jason Peel is known nationally as the former executive chef for Roy’s Waikiki and beloved locally as a cooking instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. He opened his own restaurant Nami Kaze in 2022, quickly scoring a couple of James Beard Award nominations for izakaya-style small plates, both hot and cold, that star ingredients from favorite local farmers and fishermen. Be sure to try the hamachi rolls, plus the honey walnut shrimp stacked on waffles at brunch.

Not sure I understand the hype. Creative dishes but not sure it’s executed that well. Also, note the menu has changed, no longer small plates to share but more traditional apps/entree/dessert. We ordered the ulu tator tots and tomato tofu appetizers. Ulu tots was good. The tomatoes tofu dish was very smoky, if you like that, then you’ll like the dish. For entree we ordered the steamed kanpachi in broth which tasted bland. The short rib was good but I didn’t taste any Tom yum flavors which was what was highlighted in the menu. It tasted like any normal short rib to me. We also had the lobster pasta in Singaporean chilli garlic. I think the inspiration was chilli crab but it just tasted like pasta in chill garlic that you buy from the jar in the grocery store.

Honestly, the food is pretty good but given the hype (James beard nomination, etc) and also the high price point we were really disappointed. It was not executed well (overcooked scallops, cold risotto) and the flavors were uninteresting. It’s not cooking at anywhere near the level of say Bar Maze or Senia but the prices were still pretty high. Sometimes you can have a good time when the food is just okay but the server was also not very professional and the environment was loud, a bit sports-bar like. The latter is a personal preference but it just wasn’t our style. It felt too much like going to Yardhouse or something. In summary, I’d keep my expectations low and would not recommend for a romantic night out. Ok for a casual bite if in the area but I still think it’s too expensive for what is you get.

Food was fine. But the restaurant needs to address some serious service issues. Hopefully a one off for a restaurant that received good reviews in the past.

Our dinner at Nami Kase was our first experience with the restaurant. And it was a very pleasant surprise! The vegetable appetizers were very tasty and deceptively filling. Our entree courses were large and delicious! We had to take home a portion of the entree. Our server was very attentive and helpful with recommendations on the menu. While our wait for the entrees was a little long, the restaurant filled up after our reservation, so the kitchen was busy. We plan to return to Nami Kase in the near future!!
