Next Door is the sister restaurant of Margaret, which, quite literally, sits next door to it at the corner of Bay St and Guilfoyle Avenue. Featuring a rolling 12-hour lunch-to-dinner menu, the bar brings you a selection of specially curated small plates such as Woodfire Grilled Peppers, Cherry Tomatoes with Oregano, Braised Zucchini with Mint, Chilli and Pecorino, as well as an amazing selection of Consorcio, Cuca, Pollastrini, Ortiz and Real Conversas tins with some freshly baked sourdough from Baker Bleu. It's also home to the famous Perry hamburger.

"It's just a place to get some really nice hospitality, chill out and enjoy your day," Neil Perry.
Sandwiched between Baker Bleu and Margaret, the indoor dining area is cosy and comfortable, with marble-top tables and an open bar and kitchen.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Next Door Double Bay is celebrated for its "delicious food" and "exceptional service." Diners rave about standout dishes like the Basque cheesecake and the "artistic" hamburger. While the ambiance is inviting, some found the space a bit cramped. Overall, the restaurant offers a memorable dining experience with a fantastic wine list.

Usually I love Next Door but as often happens with restaurants it is slipping. My pasta was undercooked, served cold with very little flavour. The crab meat was clumped together and not seasoned at all. Chips were also cold. Main meal was very slow coming out and we had barely finished when the waiter brought the bill as he “had another party for the table”. My plate was full (uneaten) and he did not even ask if there was a problem. I had also emailed when booking to ask for a cupcake for my companions birthday (I have always been given one for a birthday at these venues) and despite her birthday being acknowledged on arrival the celebratory cupcake was never presented. Next Door felt very ‘numbers game’ - get the diners in and out. Service was terribly average. I won’t return which is a shame. I’ve been a consistent customer. I hope Margaret where I also eat at frequently has kept up the standard.

It is the best! Always an excellent experience. Superb food and even better staff who are wonderful, engaging, friendly and knowledgeable about the food in the detail that is typical of service staff at two hat restaurants. Thank you Next Door!

Being bothered every 5 mins about ordering our food and getting the bill because they need the table back ruined the experience. We were aware of the sitting time and more than happy to comply but this does not mean u need to remind us every 5 mins and rush our ordering process and getting the bill process. Constantly disrupted is not a vibe.

A lovely bright restaurant enjoyable for lunch but food disappointing a spinach pie at $42 a little over the top & terribly presented a pie on a plate & that’s it no garnish nothing & inside the pie just wilted spinach & all for $42 . As lovely as the restaurant is I wouldn’t go back I think Neil Perry has to left his game at Next Door

It’s rare that one encounters a hamburger so transcendent that it defies categorisation, but the creation at Next Door is nothing short of an artistic masterpiece. A symphony of flavors that elevates the humble burger to the realm of fine art. This burger does not merely satisfy hunger; it orchestrates an experience akin to standing before an inspirational art work in the Louvre or absorbing the crescendo of an operatic aria. The moment it arrives at your table, its form captivates, a toasted brioche bun gleams like a polished sculpture, cradling a perfectly charred patty, juicy, smoky, and exuding an aroma that commands undivided attention. Every bite is a harmonious ballet, where each ingredient plays its role to perfection. The sharpness of pickled onions cuts through the richness of melted aged cheddar, while fresh greens provide a delicate contrast, as if a painter had chosen the precise brushstroke to balance bold strokes with subtle hues. The condiments, a house-made aioli kissed with garlic and a tomato relish that feels hand-plucked from a garden, are thoughtfully applied, like an artist’s final touches that breathe life into the canvas. Then there’s the patty itself, a decadent mosaic of texture and taste, with each bite resembling a perfectly composed stanza of poetry, intense, flavorful, and complex. It would not be hyperbole to say that this burger stands alongside the greats of culinary craftsmanship. Much like Michelangelo’s David or Van Gogh’s Starry Night, this burger transcends its medium and becomes a thing of wonder. It leaves an indelible mark, not merely on your palate but on your memory, setting an impossibly high standard for all future chefs to aspire to. Next Door has accomplished what few can. They’ve taken the everyday burger and transformed it into an edible masterpiece. This is, without doubt, the apex of hamburger artistry, an experience so profound that it doesn’t just feed you, it moves you!

Next Door Double Bay is a great casual dining spot with a fantastic wine list and delicious food. The relaxed atmosphere makes it an enjoyable place to unwind. However, the tables were spaced quite close together, and at times it felt like we were sharing a conversation with the table next to us. Despite that, the overall experience was positive, and I’d still recommend it for the food and wine alone!
