Our favorite Italian restaurant for more than 40 years. We like the seafood linguine and veal piccata the best.

My wife and I have been here several times before and everything has always been excellent. This time, we had the Christmas "Seven Fishes" prix fixe and were, frankly, disappointed. Only one thing was truly excellent, and that was the bread service - the fresh-baked bread was very, very good, and the dip was superb. They mixed the herbs and a lot of garlic with the balsamic vinegar first and then added olive oil. It was delicious. For the first course, we were expecting that the sturgeon would be cold smoked, but it was hot-smoked and barely had any smoke flavor. Otherwise, it was nicely garnished with capers, arugula, lemon, and EVOO. Caesar salad was good, but not so good as to grab your attention. For mains, we tried both offerings. The linguini with seafood and red sauce was too hot to eat at first, and the pasta was slightly overcooked. The seafood was, fortunately, not overcooked, but the dish just didn't come together or stand out. Shrimp risotto was cooked just right, but again, was not outstanding. Neither met the standard we've come to expect at this restaurant. Tiramisu dessert was a lighter version of this classic, but the custard sauce was thin, and the ladyfingers seemed to have been oversoaked in American coffee rather than expresso. The overall effect was pretty much watery. WE REALLY APPRECIATE THAT THE ONLY SOUNDS WERE PEOPLE TALKING, AND THERE WAS NO CRASHING, WHINING "MUSIC".

Sorry to say, Piatti has changed a bit. I've been going there for 14 years and my favorite dish is their orecchiette with sun-dried tomatoes and asparagus. It's changed from what it was...now it's got spinach in it, no asparagus, and smaller portions. Still good flavor though. And they charge for the bread they serve, who does that? So if you have two portions, you're charged $24. So just be prepared to pay for everything that hits your table.

What elevates Piatti head and shoulders above others in its class is their amazing attention to high quality offerings, superior service, and the little touches that make a celebration most memorable. When I made the reservation for the 3 of us older women, in the Open Table space for identifying a special occasion I noted that my wife Kathryn was turning 70. When we walked into the restaurant and were seated in their award-winning patio, as requested, we found that our printed menus had in the corner: "Happy 70th birthday, Kathryn." My wife was so thrilled that she took a picture and sent it to the rest of her family. That started a fabulous lunch accompanied by a bit of alcohol (excellent martinis and Mai Tais), their warm ciabatta with to-die-for olive-oil-and-spices (what are those spices? we wiped up every bit) for dipping, and three kinds of pastas: pappardelle, penne Bolognese, and rotolo. After getting our leftover paper boxes, the waitperson brought out 3 forks and a piece of tiramisu with a candle for Kathryn to make a wish on and blow out. She's not a fan of coffee, but in this instance, she said it didn't overwhelm the chocolate and light cake flavors. We're luck to live within 15 minutes of this establishment. Take a Lyft, it's in a popular neighborhood and street parking is always at a premium.

The worst. Extremely poor service. Because there were 3 of us, they gave us a ridiculously small table with my husband facing a wall. Husband ordered the chicken breast which looked like two overdone balls of hard chicken. Our server was nowhere in sight and for that matter there were hardly any servers available. Most of them were next to the kitchen talking with one another. Finally got the “manager” who apparently had never managed anything and who just kept saying that “maybe he needed to keep a better eye on things”. We wanted to order dessert. Finally after a long wait for someone, anyone, to take our dessert order, we just left. We have been to Piatti’s often. This is not the Piatti’s we used to know. A big disappointment.

The patio was lovely at Christmastime this year. Poinsettias growing in the garden around the giant tree (magnolia I think), and the heaters made it nice and warm. Outside is usually quieter; we had a table of 20 out there while we were eating, but it wasn't bad; inside it would have been awful to sit next to a rowdy bunch of ladies, but this was actually not too loud. Food as always was delicious. Veal piccata, papperdalle with shrimp, and cavatappi, all served hot and tasty.

One of the best Italian restaurants in the La Jolla area. The staff and the server are professional and friendly. It’s also very cozy and romantic. But it’s family oriented as well. The food is delicious!
