Situated down a quiet side street, on the corner of elegant St Peter’s Square, The Carpenter’s Arms is an independent nineteenth-century pub with a beautiful garden where the food is the star.

We focus on simple, beautifully cooked seasonal food. Our menu and Specials Board change daily: Simply cooked sustainable fish; British meats; delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes and tempting puddings to finish. Simple dishes, big flavours.

We are just as serious about good drink as we are about good food. Our well stocked bar helps keep the relaxed and convivial spirit of a local boozer very much alive.

We operate a rotating list of guest real ales, as well as world wines from just under £30 a bottle. We also serve the only cocktails worth filling the glass for – a negroni for lunch, a martini before dinner, an Old Fashioned when you need a stiff drink, a Margarita for when you want to pretend you’re on holiday and a Bloody Mary for the morning after.

My wife and I came for a mid-week dinner. Really impressed by everything about the place, but especially the food. We both had fish - cod and halibut - which was excellent. Also very good Otter beer on draft. We had a table at one end of the bar, next to an open fire which added to the pleasant experience. We don’t live locally, but, if we did, we would be regulars.

Great kitchen, nice atmosphere, a real neighborhood pub. Almost don’t want to give too good a review so it doesn’t get crowded but the team there deserves accolade.

Fabulous pub with great atmosphere. The onglet was cooked to perfection. Friendly staff and a cosy fire. New owners are doing a great job.

This is one of the worst meals I have ever had. The new owners should have a good look at how their kitchen is being run. The gazpacho soup was flavourless and watery, the ham hock terrine was solid and tough, and the herb crusted cod was almost raw floating in a lukewarm flavourless broth surrounded by floating chunks of hard vegetables. My friends’ desserts were fine I believe. This pub used to be a special place we would take visitors - now I’d be embarrassed to.

Quality of food gone down. Gazpacho was not flavourful. Causer salad was poor for 20£. Portions not large either. Artichoke tortellini was ok

Superb local pub. Would bet good to let the Union Jack outside be on full display rather than rolled up. Will be coming back here soon no doubt.
