It seems to be a trend in most places now to place all the food in a big pile in the centre of the plate leaving you to dismantle it all before you can start to eat. Leaving you know choice as to how much or what you want. This is not the case at the Merchants Yard. How nice it was to have your food beautifully presented on a wooden platter so you can serve yourself. The beef was perfectly cooked as were the vegetables. The staff were just delightful making sure we had everything we needed and checking that we were happy….We were 😊 We live locally and discuss eating places with many people. This we will be recommending for a fine roast dinner Keep up the good work MY.

2 mains were good, but 2 were poor. The pork cutlet was tough and tasteless. Burger was dry. Have been to merchants yard several times before, but this visit was disappointing, below par and certainly not value for money. Advised staff about pork, but they just said would tell the kitchen. This meal was for a special occasion, so feel very let down.

Very nice lunch. Friendly and efficient staff. A bit noisy - due to the hard floor I suspect. Overall very good.

Unfortunately I would not recommend a meal at this restaurant. I don’t know if it was a bad night but the service was poor and the meals over cooked. The main course arrived after 60 minutes. We were given a complementary drink but with no explanation. I am so disappointed with my visit.

The Merchants Yard is beautiful, a wonderful building and very tastefully renovated to the highest standard. The problem is that builds expectations, so that when one enters and is taken to a table you think that the food is going to match the surroundings. Sadly that is not the case. The menu was not particularly exciting and with fish and chips and a burger in a bun as two of the options it resembled pub food rather than a high end restaurant which is what you would expect. The restaurant was quiet for a Saturday evening but the service although good was very slow. There seemed to be a couple of young men hovering about doing very little whilst we were waiting to place a drinks order and only one waitress in evidence at this stage. Eventually she was able to take our drinks order and the wine did arrive and was good. We placed orders for our meal and seemed to wait a very long time even though the restaurant was quiet. Then the waitress came over to advise that they had run out of the soup of the day (Mushroom) which I had ordered and would I like something else. I chose the Quail. She then returned with the starters for the other 7 but not mine as I had only just placed the order. It did arrive eventually and was very good but I am puzzled as to why they did not realise that there was no soup when my order went into the kitchen and why it was only when all the other starters were ready that someone realised. The main courses were poor. The battered fish was overcooked and very drk suggesting that an oil change was required in the deep fat fryer, the burgers were also overcooked and the skin on the duck was greasy and not at all crisp. Overall a very disappointing experience for my daughters birthday and I was so hopeful that we had a decent restaurant within striking distance.
