Vernick Fish presents Philadelphia’s own, Chef Greg Vernick’s exploration beyond the boundaries of a seafood restaurant. His ingredient-driven cooking style, paired with a love for global flavors, results in an inventive menu of fish and shellfish dishes, and a range of vegetable preparations. Taking a detailed, seasonal, and sustainable approach with small and large plate offerings, the kitchen brings new life to the favorite hallmarks of American oyster bar fare and raw bar. Complementing the experience are well-crafted cocktails, and a focused wine list of seafood-friendly white and sparkling offerings, as well as light, fresh reds.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Greg Vernick and CDC David Paterniti

From the OpenTable editors: Sleek interiors meet thoughtful service at this celebratory Logan Square seafood spot. James Beard Award-winning chef Greg Vernick walks the line between innovative and nostalgic with dishes like sardines on sourdough toast and grilled scallops that are masterclasses in careful sourcing and precise preparation, but also wipe-your-plate-clean delicious. If you’re toasting to something special, get one of the hard-to-find spirits or wines from the top-notch drinks program.

The branzino and the snapper were our highlights last night. we had the sides of broccolini and potatoes which were so fresh and delicious. There were starters of crudos salmon and yellow tail which were small but tasty bites for the 4 of us. The clams were liked by three the 4th is not a fan of cooked clams.

Our waiter was not friendly this time and hardly made eye contact with us. The food was excellent, though, as per usual.

The food was very tasty but service left a lot to be desired, and the experience was not worth the cost. We had a reservation for 2 for my birthday at 7, and arrived at 6:51. The hostess asked us to wait a few minutes while they got the table ready, and offered either a bench in the hotel lobby or a lounge seating area behind the host stand. We sat in the lounge area and waited for about 5 minutes before someone came to take a drink order. At 7:07 I stood up to go check in with the host when someone walked by and said to me "We're clearing off the table right now, it'll only be a few more minutes." At 7:15 a manager came by and said "We apologize for the wait, we're just sanitizing the table now and I will come and seat you when it's ready." At 7:30 I walked over to the host stand where the hostess immediately said "We didn't forget about you! The table there is just taking really long." We waited another 3 minutes until someone came over to seat us at our table. On the way to our 2-top we saw another 2-top table also empty. Someone came over to fill our water glasses and our server came and dropped off menus. Then we didn't see her for another 10-15 min. We ordered our food and a bottle of wine to split between us. While we were both working on our first glasses of wine, my boyfriend finished his and I was about half through mine when our server came over poured my boyfriend another glass then topped mine off, and placed an empty bottle on the table. It was not the wine we ordered, so she mixed wines in my glass and gave him the wrong wine. I alerted her to this and she apologized, brought new glasses and our wine over, and offered us glasses of wine on her. The kitchen sent over one small plate as well. We appreciated the effort to comp items but were overall disappointed with no further acknowledgment of the delay once seated nor ever seeing a manager again. As I said the food was good but the experience was not and we won't be coming back.

Beautiful space and ambiance. Great service. We were excited to go given the buzz and that the menu is very fish forward as a member of our family has a dairy allergy. We are lucky to have eaten at many of the best Philly eateries over the years and are used to high prices given our new home location near Boston. But the prices for everything were exorbitant. $20 for a glass of wine. $8 for a tiny glass coke. We really liked the cold starters but the prices were high and the portion sizes were small. The octopus dish was good though there was a bit of a chew to the thicker pieces. The scallop dish was about $50 for 3 large scallops (they were prepared very well.. the accompanying sauce was OK). We have had many inspired memorable meals around Philly (e.g., Zahav, Vedge, Little Fish, Laurel, Parc) for far less a price ( or more value) unfortunately.

Yellowtail and sea bream crudos were the standouts, incredible. Oysters, salmon crudo, and the scallop and branzino entrees were all immaculate. Shrimp cocktail, yellowfin tartare, and sardines were good but I wouldn't order again at these prices. Service was friendly but I'd hope for smoother somewhere this expensive. We were sat at a lounge table to wait until our table was ready 20 minutes after our reservation. We felt a bit forgotten until someone took our drink and app orders from there, which was a surprise. Backups happen but a little more initial communication would have gone a long way. We were also charged for an extra oyster and a Grey Goose upgrade when we asked for Tito's. We took the elevator to the top floor bar for dessert- highly recommend on a weeknight! Desserts were simple and good if a bit pricey, but worth it for the view of the city.

$31 for a martini. I am in Philadelphia a few times a year and lately have looked forward to eating at Vernick's. The food is always good. Sometimes it is excellent, sublime even. It's inconsistent. Last night was no exception. It might be my last visit. My ceviche appetizer was amazing. My halibut entree was overcooked and dry. The sauce and mushrooms in the dish were great but the panko crumbs on halibut was a mismatch that only served to mask, rather than compliment the flavor of the fish and make it seem even drier. It was not a successful dish. But the killer was the $31 martini that was not cold, certainly not in a chilled glass. It was just a basic martini, nothing special about it and it was $31. Service was friendly and efficient. Vernick's is consistently expensive but unfortunately it is not consistently good.

My Branzino was excellent, as usual. My husband’s steak was just ok. Our waiter took our water order and then he appeared to be reassigned, without telling us anything. He just ignored us. Someone else took our food order after we sat for almost 30 minutes while being ignored by the person we thought was our waiter. (He then began waiting on the two tables on either side of us.) We waited over 20 minutes for our drinks to appear from the bar. We had to ask for bread and the young woman who brought the bread was rude and did not crack a smile. We were celebrating our 42nd wedding anniversary on Sunday night. We will not be celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary there. My husband was in a bad mood when we left. Ugh.
