At Sierra Mar Restaurant, we seek out local partners who share our reverence for nature, craftsmanship, and authenticity. With that in mind, we invite you to join us on Friday, April 25, as we welcome Beauregard Vineyards to Post Ranch Inn for our inaugural Meet the Winemaker event. Beauregard’s deep roots, sustainable practices, and expressive wines reflect the same spirit that guides everything we do here in Big Sur. Joining us will be winemaker Ryan Beauregard, who will share a curated tasting of his wines, walk guests through the nuances of his winemaking approach, and discuss the history, terroir, and future of the winery in an informal discussion and Q&A session. Paired with an array of light bites, the afternoon promises spectacular wines, meaningful conversation, and a deep connection to the land and people behind each bottle. This special event offers a rare opportunity to explore the wines of one of California’s oldest and most storied winegrowing families. Established in 1945, Beauregard Vineyards has been tending to the rugged coastal slopes of Bonny Doon in the Santa Cruz Mountains for nearly 80 years. Today, Ryan Beauregard leads the charge, garnering praise for crafting age-worthy Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon from three stunning, Estate-farmed vineyards, establishing Beauregard as one of the premier wineries in the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA (American Viticultural Area).

There is, one must admit, a certain grandeur to arriving at Sierra Mar. Perched high on a bluff in Big Sur, wrapped in fog like a secret whispered by the Pacific, the setting is operatic in scope. Unfortunately, that seduction ends the moment the food arrives. We came for lunch, a prix fixe menu and wine flight. What we encountered was something more akin to a luxury day camp cafeteria—if that cafeteria were manned by listless staff more interested in their phones than the patrons. As for the food, it was executed with a kind of bland indifference that bordered on the hostile. Courses arrived in baffling combinations. Two salads to share, served in large bowls as if at a potluck, were limp and forgettable. But the true offense came next: a single hot plate heaving with burger, steak, and fish, all crammed together like livestock on Noah’s Ark. Predictably, the fish’s pungency colonized everything else. One imagines this was meant to be inventive. It was not. It was an affront. The wine pairings, so often the salvation of a tepid kitchen, were ruined by a server whose rhythm was so out of sync it felt like we were dining in a time warp. Champagne arrived with the salad, the rose and red wine at the same time, the supposed “pairings” were so out of sync, it became unbearable. To say nothing of the fact that the server got one of the mains order wrong. So two burgers had to suffer next to the fish. But the gravest crime of all—the unpardonable sin—was that none of it tasted like anything. The food was not bad in the way of a misfire. It was bad in the way of boredom. It aspired to nothing and achieved less. Not a single flavor lingered, haunted, or surprised. It was a $400 lunch one forgets before the valet retrieves the car. There are, I’m told, better options. One imagines it would not be difficult to find them. A roadside taco stand. A well-made sandwich by the sea. Anything, really, prepared with care and intention.

Enjoyed the whole experience. Food and services were excellent and on top of that it was a beautiful clear evening, to watch the sunset over the ocean.

Returned to Post Ranch Inn yesterday after an outstanding meal there a few years ago. We have come from Victoria Australia to visit family so it is a very special treat for us (at $185 for a fixed price tasting menu it is at the high end). Sadly our experience fell short of our last visit. The change to a fixed menu is disappointing and I feel that having no choice at all is quite lazy. I like that they are using local produce and some food they grow there but I wonder at the dominance of mushrooms on the menu in April. The food was excellent quality but inconsistent - nothing really stood out as being brilliant and memorable, as each dish had done for us in our last visit. The dessert was very disappointing - a medicinal tasting eucalyptus icecream (a tiny ball) on a stodgy chocolate cookie with a couple of quite heavy white chocolate tuilles. Things were out of order (coffee brought before dessert, a salad at the start?) and the service, while attentive, felt mechanical. Sadly, after so much anticipation, I doubt I will return.

Dear Meghan, We thank you for joining us again and making us a part of your recent U.S. visit. While we are elated to know that you held such fond memories of your experience from years ago, we are sorry to learn that your most recent visit fell short in comparison, and we wish to extend our regrets. As you likely know, we are always happy to prepare an alternate dish if a course falls short of expectations and we hope this option was offered to you. When you next find yourself visiting the area, we hope that you’ll join us once more as we’d like nothing more than the chance to restore your confidence in the memories you have held onto so dearly. Until then. In the spirit of hospitality, Reylon Agustin Director of Culinary Sierra Mar

Dear Aarthi, Reading that you’ll join us again is the greatest gift of all and we thank you for taking the time to share your thoughtful review. As you likely discovered, our Big Sur sunsets include streaks of burnt sienna and violet, melting into the silvery mirror of the Pacific below, and we trust you captured several photos to share with friends and family at home. We appreciate your culinary notes, and we are thrilled to read that Brianna, and the rest of our team took great care in ensuring that any concerns were quickly resolved. Please do visit again. It has to be the most beautiful setting for a dining experience on earth. Not only are the views stunning from the Big Sur cliffs, but the food is crafted in such a wholesome, creative way. It’s a fabulous place for lunch and a must do for dinner and the sunset.
