Richard is great! Master of his trade. I am the general manager of a steakhouse in Cincinnati, OH and from a service standpoint, you’ve found a gem in Richard.

Extremely loud restaurant would not recommend for a date night. My husband ordered the filet and it was paper thin. The famous shrimp were good lots of horseradish but overly priced for sure. The waiter was very attentive and nice.

For a classic steakhouse, it was just OK. The lobster bisque and shrimp cocktail were the best things. Service was decent.

As a return customer, the consistency of the food is great and expectations are met. On this visit, the two of us dining split a shrimp cocktail (not the best shrimp I’ve ever had but certainly not the worst and at $20, a good deal), a wedge salad (the salad components are fairly basic and the dressing was standard but the big chunks of bacon help make the salad at least a little bit special), and a filet with fries (I ordered the fries crispy because most kitchens don’t fry fries long enough to get them crispy on the outside and soft on the inside which is my preference). We also ordered a bottle of wine but had to reference a bin number for the waiter because he didn’t know which wine it was. It was surprising that our waiter didn’t have a good working knowledge of the wine list considering St Elmo’s seems to pride itself on having an extensive, but very Napa/California heavy, wine list. The overall dining experience was what one might expect from an old school mid-to-high tier steakhouse. At the end of meal, however, an odd thing happened. After the waiter ran my card and we completed the transaction table-side, the waiter extended his hand for me to shake it (I had given him a standard tip amount). Shaking the waiter’s hand wasn’t something I had ever experienced but maybe I’m missing something? No matter, it was just odd but not unpleasant. I would recommend St Elmo’s to anyone who finds themselves in downtown Indianapolis and wants a good steakhouse experience.

Waitress rushed all the courses; our Japanese guests were savoring everything. She blamed the kitchen. Whatever.

Over the years St. Elmo’s has consistently been one of the best steak houses in the country. Last night was either off or their quality and execution has gone down a big notch. Service still on par. Is it the cook or product?
