Great food in a lovely pub. Service was a little sporadic given it was relatively quiet

10 of us went to the Royal Oak for lunch on a Saturday. Delicious food, very attentive service and a lovely table in a private room. Defintely recommend to others.

My last visit was early December 2024. It was good to be able to return for a midweek lunch. The quality of the food, its presentation and the attentiveness of staff remain first rate. It is a very pleasant place to eat. It is well worth 'deviating' off the M4! However, on previous visits I don't recall having to listen to background music. In my humble opinion it's not required. What I should have done was ask politely to request the sound be turned down or off. Seeing the team of chefs at work or looking out through the bifold doors into the garden helps to provide for the pleasant atmosphere that contributes to the appeal of enjoying a good lunch at The Royal Oak. I shall return!

Birthday treat for my husband who it quite a fussy eater. We were not disappointed. Lovely country setting with log burner, relaxed but special. Food was so flavourful and beautifully presented, but not in a pretentious way. Enough choice to suit us both, without being overwhelming. Service at the Royal Oak was friendly, efficient and not overbearing. If we lived a little closer it could easily become a well loved local. Ambience was relaxed with a little music in the background which was at the perfect level to allow conversation. We would recommend wholeheartedly. Prices are comparable to other gastro type pubs, athough I will say you get a better portion size here. The only minor niggle is that on a busy night there may be a parking issue.

Something strange with the acoustics in the main restaurant and what was the best food I have enjoyed for years should have led to me having a great lunch. However I could not hear conversation my dining partners from across the table. Next time I will book away from the main dining area.
