Yopparai is a well-loved Japanese restaurant and sake bar known for a wide variety of sake paired with traditional Japanese cuisine. We serve traditional Japanese favorites like sashimi, sushi and grilled meat/fish, while also offering signature dishes like homemade tofu, oden, and Japanese-style hot pot. All of our dishes are homemade using a combination of fresh local ingredients and fish and meat sourced from Japan. We offer unique seating in intimate booths on Japanese tatami mats, as well as counter seating in front of our sushi chefs.

If you're celebrating a special occasion, please consider our limited-availability chef's omakase menu. The omakase experience may be booked in advance through Open Table or by calling the restaurant.

Yopparai is one of my two favorite Japanese restaurants in New York and I’ve been going there about 15 years. Yopparai (which means “a drunk” in Japanese because of its great sake list) is simple, excellent Japanese home cooking. The counter seats are for 2 people and that’s the best way to eat there if it’s just 2. The staff is outstanding and quality is excellent. They always have specials so it never gets old. My favorites are the sashimi sampler where the only use the best fish and great variety, karaage (fried chicken), kanuni (pork belly in dashi broth), tsukune (a chicken meatball patty topped with a raw egg yolk you mix together) and grilled squid! Love this place. Always feel like home!

Yopparai offers a unique Japanese dining experience. The sake menu is worth the visit, but what was truly special was the ambiance. We sat with friends in a secluded booth, artfully decorated, which set the stage. Our waiter did an excellent job of guiding us through the menu, which has many familiar-looking items (sushi/sashimi/tempura/etc). But the care and presentation here was out of the ordinary. Highly recommended.

Amazing food and wonderful service. The waitstaff was impeccably attentive. The waiter took his time to explain all the sake on the menu and also gave us a tasting. The Yopparai Chirashi was delicious along with the octopus and beef tongue specials. Great experience overall.

Sushi was not great, and way overpriced. Ordered the 10 piece, which was $85, and received 10 very mediocre and small pieces. The Chu-toro didn't taste fresh. The one that you would expect to be salmon was actually trout (cheaper fish). The scallop dish tasted good but was tiny ($17 for maybe one or two scallops cut up in small pieces). Many other places in NYC with much better sushi and Japanese food. Coming from someone who grew up in Tokyo. The vibe is incredible in there, and the service is great. Alcohol is good too. Unfortunate that the food is lacking and way overpriced. Won't go back for food but maybe for drinks.
